thecheesemiester
Please help, i have sold a Bachmann 56xx on eBay and the buyer said it was a little growly. i recommended that he oil it and he said he has now done it and it ran for about 10 laps around a large layout before losing power and smoking. i have never heard of this before. any ideas? quick help would be urgently appreciated as i dont want to leave the buyer hanging. Jenny Emily
Sounds like he is describing the magic smoke escaping. Not seeing the actual condition of the chassis after his actions, it could well be that he has drowned the thing in oil, and it has found its way to the brushes and commutator, causing a short that in turn may have burnt out the motor windings. If that is what he has managed to do, then the fault would lie with him for not oiling the mechanism in an appropriate manner.
daftbovine
Over oiling is very common, a couple of locos I have bought second hand have been swimming in oil and I've had to do lots of mopping up. One even had a handwritten oiling schedule written on the instructions, it seems as though the owner oiled it every year regardless of whether it needed it or not. If the buyer has tried to oil the motor bearings oil could easily have got onto the commutator. He has a large layout so you would assume he isn't a beginner and would know how to oil correctly but my over oiled purchases came from 'experienced' Modellers'.
