STATIC TRAM SOUND EFFECT

Recommended Posts

My friend is building a nice DCC layout on which he will run his 5 locos each with sound.

The layout also has a small Tram circuit where a tram starts, runs in a road which ends at the railway station where it stops for a while then reverses back to the other end where it stops again before repeating the movement again.

Suggestions please....

How can I sync a Tram recording to run when the tram runs. Then stop until it moves off again?

What cheap tape player could be set up automatically to achieve this.

Thank you

No although the layout is DCC, the Tram & it's track are DC.  Only a short run to where it goes out of sight - stops, waits then reverses back into view and stops near the station and waits before reversing.  A static speaker near the station is all that is needed.  The sound needs to be in sync with he movement.

I haven't got the faintest idea how to do this.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you buy non-dcc sound models? Not off the rtr manufacturs no, but I've definetly seen adds in the magazines for locos/wagons with motion sensing speakers in them. I can't imagine their great for steam locos (lack of decent syncronisation) but for trams it would probably be OK. Problem would be finding space in a tram model for the kit I suppose, but i'm sure it could be overcome

Someone on the Narrow Gauge Modelling Online Forum started a topic on ambient sounds, and bought a couple of these. I've also got two to experiment with, but haven't tried them yet. There are also versions with built in power amplifiers available for a couple of pounds more. There are various people selling them on eBay, but the link is where I bought mine, and the transaction went smoothly with no problems.

I don't know if/how you could get them to work automatically though, but they are cheap enough to experiment with. If you work it out, I'd like to know!

You could use something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200s-USB-module-for-greeting-card-device-voice-music-cards-musical-sound-MP3-/230761780701?hash=item35ba7955dd:g:gLAAAMXQkN1Ryz3r

which you could adapt to be switched by your shuttle module.

you can quite easily create your own mp3 file using free sound editing software and extracting the sounds you need from fair quality clips from the internet.

Then  use the static DCC sound decoder with the motor power wires connected to the tram track to drive the tram. Far and away the simplest solution since DCC is already available on. the layout, and shuttle control is an integrated feature of better decoders.

Hello,

MERG (Model Electronic Railway Group) offers for free public download a substantial "e-book" about many aspects of applying electronics to model railways which includes a chapter on 'Adding Sound' which explains sound techniques and how to use various devices that are available. The book assumes no previous electronics knowledge on the part of the reader.

"Electronics for Model Railways" by Davy Dick.

You can download it in PDF format here: http://www.merg.org.uk

'Adding Sound' may be found in Part A, Chapter 10.

regards, Rodney Hills
