MTK Class 158 DMU

Me and and a mate are putting together an MTK kit to act as an extra 2-car un-powered unit to complement the Bachmann unit. We're not sure how far to go with this unit but here's the progress so far after much filing of the ends:

The detail on this kit is quite impressive but the castings are a bad fit to the aluminium bodies and require a lot of fettling.

Here's some of the underframe castings after being stuck to the aluminuim flooring sections with superglue (after roughing-up the mating surfaces)

Interiors will have to be scratch built as they are not supplied in the kit.

Cheers

Brilliant marketing line for MTK kits....it's not about the cost to buy one but the adventure ! I absolutely agree having built a class 312 emu and a 321& 309 in the waiting. Half the fun is sourcing bits like better bogies and appropriate power units

I bet you could have put it on Ebay, and some "collector" would have paid over the odds for an unbuilt boxed original "RARE" kit, and you could have bought two cheap Bachmann ones with the proceeds!

Good luck though! The front end looks very short and fat, it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the Bachmann one, I was going to say I'd probably think about extending the height of the windscreen line/reducing the size of the roof dome with black paint at the top, but then the gangway would be too short in relation to the windows.

Gawd I built one of these when they first came out, motorised it using a Lima DMU power bogie, remember being impressed it came with the side striping and "Express" logos, turned out quite well for the time I thought.

As an aside I remember the first MTK 'O' gauge kits being marketted as "El CrappO" kits around the same time. Play to your strengths, as they say!

Hope the 158 turns out well!

I have 3 of the Bachmann 158's, this kit is just for something to knock together and may cost Twice as much to construct yet be unpowered. we aren't making it to compare against the Bachmann 158. This is about real modelling, anyone can pop open a box on a RTR model, but not many would put this fine kit together!

One thing you get with doing a kit like this, is that you find, see and discover more about the loco, more then you ever will with popping open the sides of the box, sliding out the polystyrene, in which the loco sits, and turning it upside and letting it drop in to your hand!

I don't think anyone could class them self as a modeller, until they have tackled an MTK kit!

Well said, I have several locos, coaches and wagons where better and newer models now exist, but there is always something more satisfying about saying "I made that".

Progress is at a bit of a halt, I am awaiting some brass bearings for the wheels, need these to build bogies up, to position and then position all the chassis detail.

I have slapped on a bit of filler around the front and read ends.
