RMweb Gold highpeakman Posted October 13, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 13, 2016 I am building a layout based (loosely) on Wirksworth (Including elements of High Peak and Cromford and High Peak) during 1960-1965. i.e. Derbyshire peaks Limestone quarrying. I intended to have one or two tank wagons to bring fuel to the crushing plants for use by their privately owned diesel shunters. I assume the plants themselves were electrically powered? (Or possibly gas for kilns? - see below). The Bachmann Shell/BP 20t tank 38-776 seemed to me to look the appropriate type for the era but I note that Hattons describe the era of these as era 6, 1967- 1971. This type would have been in use earlier so I assume it would be the markings of the tanks that is different but I am not sure how they would differ. Can anyone advise please? I have looked around in many books and at Paul Bartlett's web site but cannot pin down the type and markings of wagons that might have been used for that type of traffic in that era. Perhaps that means that this type of traffic (single wagon, relatively small volume) was no longer carried by rail at that time when the move to bulk trains had started? I have many books on the Derbyshire area and limestone workings but cannot find any pictures of tank wagons either in trains or sidings so would this have been a type of traffic during this period at this location? I have a picture of one of the quarry plants around Wirksworth which appears to show large fixed gas (LPG) tank as a fuel store for the kiln - would the gas have been brought in by rail? If so then what type of tank would have been used? Perhaps that was in years after the era I am modelling? Any knowledge that can be contributed would be most welcome. Thanks.
