brenn
Just some advice needed from you steam people. I just received some Hornby steam locos I got from a well-known auction site and I’m surprised as to find they are tender driven locos. I model Br Blue and so don’t known that much regarding BR steam but I thought I get some for my kids who prefer steam locos. Can someone please tell me if Hornby R2175 and R2187 are worth keeping as both are tender driven loco and what would the possible resale price be if I need to move them on? I tried to run the 9F Evening star and get a foul smell of burning…could that be a lack of running in or do I have a bigger problem Many thanks in advance Brenn
micklner
Burning smell ? I would send it back to seller for a refund. No idea what these Locos are , whatever version , they are old . If you like the one that works then keep it. If you think it was wrongly listed send it back for a refund.
RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted November 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 5, 2016 Hornby R2175 Britannia Class 7MT 4-6-2 70052 "Firth Of Tay" Hornby R2187 Class 9F 2-10-0 "Evening Star" As with all models, they are worth what the buyer will pay. Both are quite old, and both have newer loco driven releases. (The 9F of 2014/5 in this case still has the same 1979 tooling as R2187, just now with a motor in the front, not the back). As toys they are a cheaper than super detailed ones, and somewhat less delicate when it comes to handling by children, so if they bounce off the floor it doesnt hurt the wallet as much. As for smoke, they have the older ring field motor (same as many 1980/90's Hornby engines have, including Diesels & DMUs), if runs ok it may just be a dab of oil (especially if it's chirping like a parrot when it runs), if it's smoking and not moving.. then buyer beware. A newly tooled super detail loco driven Brittannia can be found on ebay in the £100-140 range, 9F is much less, tbh the older R2xxx Britannias weren't that bad, but the move to China raised the bar considerably in the detail stakes for the newer ones. RMweb Gold Hroth Posted November 8, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 8, 2016 1st thing to do is open up the tender and look at the motor armature but most importantly check for carbon build up between the copper segments because this can bridge the gap between the segments and lead to the motor overheating ( beware they do get very hot ). If there is carbon between the segments use a sewing needle and gently remove the carbon from the gaps. Now when power is applied the motor should turn. If it does then you need a cotton bud and lightly touch to the armature as this will clean the segments ( it doesn't matter if the cotton bud is dry when doing this ). Next apply a small amount of 3 in 1 oil on the centre cog on the other side of the motor and it must be just a small drop of oil as there are rubber tyres on the same side and if these get oil on them they are useless as the loco will just slip and not move at all. ... All good points for reviving locos that may not have been run for a while. For cleaning the commutator gaps (the places between the copper segments), rather than use a sewing needle, I'd recommend a fresh cocktail stick - it'll hoik as much old carbon out of the gap as a needle and you'll stand a better chance of not scratching the copper, which would cause more carbon to be deposited. I'd stick the needle in an old cork and use that to carry oil to the cogs, to minimise the amount applied.
