jonhall
I've had one of these 'in stock' for some time, but last year bought another part built from another club members estate, he had done the hard bits, the jib and the superstructure, but had not built the chassis, and I've finally had a go at finishing his, and then starting mine, and I'm not overley impressed with the instructions, therefore as an aid to others here are a few photos of the gearing to remind myself what is going where - fortunately I've got the semi built one to follow or I'd be none the wiser. the stete of play with my part-built crane is that its almost ready for rigging and final paint The sideframes with some of the sub assemblies. I've fitted the etched 'support plates' (parts 47/48 and their overlays 49) to the crab frames and part held them in place whilst soldering by tapping the upper hole to 12ba and screwing through. The parts below from left to right 1. 'Bridge casting' with 'upper thrust roller' fitted and 1mm dia shaft fitted, 2. 'worm gear? ' and 'derricking chain drum' 3.'large spoked gear' and 'hoisting drum' 4. 'gear/brake drum? ' to fit on a 2mm x 20mm shaft. 5. 'long gear shaft' 6. 'front double roller' (2 parts) and 'worm/bevel gear' I think this is more or less how it's supposed to fit?
jwealleans
Ah - that's where that little roller thing goes. I asked someone else when I found I had that left over and he then found that he had it left in the box as well. So neither of us was any the wiser. Rigging the chains is a character building experience. I used Ambis 40 LPI instead of that supplied, looks a great deal better. Does yours go round corners? I'm not sure the one I built (wasn't for me) would.

I haven't tried running it yet, no match wagon or couplings, but the bogies swing Ok so provided the radius isn't too tight it looks OK (00) mine was really intended as a static item 'depot pet' for my long planned and increasingly unlikely to get built on-track-plant and crane depot layout, and the second one will almost certainly be sold - it looks so nice in grey I'm not sure I have the heart to paint it black. micklner
The bogies on mine were a nightmare to get any "swing" to allow movement of any sort on a curve , perhaps the design was modified.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 9, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2016 Is this the 7mm or the 4mm version. I've got a 7mm version part built and actually got some transfers designed in conjunction with Fox but for various reasons of lethargy etc they never actually got produced. They would have served for all the Midland cranes. If you need prototype info there are a couple of articles on Midland Record. As to the rest of the train a friend of mine built a match wagon and a tool van for me and it runs as the Hellifield based Crane. It's mainly painted but not finished. When I got the kit I thought the frets looked so nice that I should polish them up and have them framed! A quick look through the instructions left me scratching my head a bit - do you have any pictures of the controls? Steve
