Another terrific announcement from Airfix

Wrong forum! Can't see how this is a lot of use to railway modellers - and at 1:72 scale it's not even matching any other railway scale. How would you incorporate it into a layout - build a naval dockside layout with an Ark Royal tied up alongside?

Tamperman36's suggestion is more appropriate.

Some of us are multi-functional / multi-disciplinary. I've got 9 Phantoms so far, a couple of these will go down nicely.

Besides, this is Wheeltappers. It's got as much to do with railways at Time Team, Type 26 frigates, road signs, poor grammar and Formula 1 but they're all here too.

I remember building the old Matchbox kit of a RR powered Phantom, it was unusual as almost all F4 models are GE powered aircraft (which is reasonable as the RR models were unique to the UK).

The IPMS show is a great show spent most of yesterday spending money.

Even if you are not a plastic kit modeller it's worth a visit just to see some fabulous models.

A number of railway related models of NG subjects of WW1

IMHO there is no better place to stock up with your modelling consumables with a massive selection of paints, glues and tools.

A number of railway exhibition traders Squires, Elieens Emporian, De Lux products etc

Cracking day out

Oh and a good car parks ho ho

At the end of the day we all have our favourite area of modelling or we wouldn't be on this forum to start with, so its good to see that new models are still being produced by Airfix after the problems that Hornby (parent company) are having with a drop in profits, however it would still be nice to see more new models other than aircraft. There are after all 3 arms to our armed forces and the army side tend to get forgotten after WW2. There is a lack of ground vehicle and troop models from WW2 up to present day.

I am not sure if you have visited the IPMS show but there were a number of 4mm model vehicles, as you state mainly army.

1/35 & 1/48 tends to be the major scale.

As I also model Gn15 there are a number of suitable 1/24 scale models

Hope to have a new GN15 layout on the circuit soon.

how about some more modern military vehicles in 1/76 scale, such as the Jackal and Coyote along with a rerun of the ex JB models stuff.

But they do produce the Jackal and Coyote under their Herrick range for Afghanistan?? Look under Themes. But the rest of the range is clearly stuck in WW2.

Nonetheless, I do agree that Airfix overall seems to suffer from the same affliction as the Hornby 00 range - they are stuck in the steam age, or at least green diesel. I cannot find a single military aircraft model later than the Harrier/Lightning or Sea King. No Tornado, no Jaguar (I am sure thy did that before) and no modern day Typhoon, or F14/16/18 or 22. 100 years of the tank does not even include a Centurion, Chieftan or Challenger - even a small French manufacturer includes the Centurion. Odd.

Is it that modern subjects simply do not sell, do you think? Or have they decided to leave those subjects to Revell, Artitec, Tamiya etc?

Airfix did some very nice Operation Herrick kits in 1/48 including ground vehicles and figures.

Unfortunately, it was apparently announced at Telford that they are ceasing production of all armour models including the Herrick range.

More recently Fujimi did kits of RR powered Phantoms, and very nice they were too. I have a couple in stock, so I can't see the Airfix one tempting me, but for anyone who doesn't have the Fujimi ones this is a great announcement.
