Alumina Wagons on the West Highland

Recommended Posts

The Procor PAB's do not have any RTR or kits produced however the chassis is similar to the Bachmann TTA but the wheelbase is 16' rather than the 15' foot of the tank.

There is a published drawing in "Modelling the British Rail era" from Santona however it is based on the loading diagram and photographs rather than actual measurements!

Both the 'Minibulks' and PAB's had modified loading hatches to suit the loader at North Blyth.

Hi, there was an article in the March 1993 issue of Railway Modeller on page 126 onwards showing you how to make the PAB wagons using the Hornby TTA tank model and butchering one of the Hornby grain wagon roof parts to form a new roof. Then by adding the end stanctions and small reinforcing webs on the sides of the tanks plus ladders etc. it made up into a pretty reasonable looking PAB. I did four of these and back then in 1995 it was one of my first modelling projects that I did coming back into the hobby. And I did I pretty reasonable job for my skills back then.

I reckon that you could make a better looking wagon now by using the Bachmann TTA as the base model and graft on a Hornby grain wagon top as per the article and it would look much better than the old Hornby model. I haven't got any photos of my four but I can arrange to take some in the next day or so.

Have you seen the photos on this site ? Huw Millington's wagon site shows the ex PAA Grain aka Whiskey Blues here http://www.flickr.com/photos/hmillington/sets/72157603195747980/?page=3 and the PAB/PAA rounded rank designs here http://www.flickr.com/photos/hmillington/sets/72157603195747980/?page=4

Note that there are two versions - the 50 x PABs (air-braked with thru vacuum pipes) and UIC double-link suspension with 14 plate laminated springs nos. PR 8000 - 8049 built by Standard Wagon in 1969/70 and followed by a second batch of 69 PAA wagons in 1973 with a similar body but this time with BSC pedestal suspension nos. PR 8050 - 8118. It is the first batch that were used on the Alumina traffic from Blyth to Fort William as shown in your photo links.

Cheers Paul

Hi Mark,

Correct - Somewhere in a previous incarnation of RMWeb - This thread exists!

But - I know more and have more info and photos since then!

Most of it is copyright - hence not posting it on here.

Thanks

ps

There are drawings for the PAB wagons used on Alumina traffic in Scotland in "Modelling the British Rail Era" published by Santona Books
