JERRY
Hello, everyone. I am originally from Glasgow but have worked abroad for many years, since 1981, in fact, with only all-too-infrequent visits back. However, I plan to go there again for a few days in mid April and would appreciate any information on the Glasgow Model Shop scene. The shops from my memory are all long-gone; Glassfords, MacMillan Models, MacKay Models in Paisley, and I've even heard one of the ladies who ran D&F Models in the Trongate passed away several years ago. A propos of this sad subject, I just got the March Railway Modeller the other day and came across a reference to 'the late W.A.C. Smith' - ( this man really was the absolute doyen of Glasgow Railway photographers ). May all the aforementioned rest in peace and I offer my sincere condolences to their families. However, could anyone please inform me as to the actual state of railway shops in Glasgow ? I think 'Pastimes' in Maryhill Rd is still in operation, but are there any more ? I mean REAL model shops with a wonderful second-hand rummage area with lots of goodies I remember from when I was a kid ! Please let me know. Many thanks, Jerry
Hammer
Pastimes is still in operation. Very good value for money as well. D&F Models is also still going, and despite having quite a sparsely lined shop, always seems to be busy. It certainly seems to be doing a good trade. LN Lancs
Hello, I mainly use D&F Models, their stock of new Bachmann and Hornby is good and their second hand counter (although not extensive) normally has something of interest and is resonably priced. Pastimes is good for rummaging around and has reasonable prices for second hand items (particularly unboxed items) but is more expensive for new items than D&F models. One other place is Trains on Time in Paisley. It's run from an industrial estate and you need to knock on the garage door to gain entry, but is competitively priced for new items, have a look on their website first to see if there is anything of interest. All 3 are run by very pleasant people and worth a visit.

JERRY
Many thanks to those who have replied. My time is VERY limited, but as I'll be based in Clydebank, I don't think D&F models or Pastimes will be all that hard for me to visit, but 'trainsontime' in Paisley may be problematic. I'll be really pleased to see the place again, and take a train trip on the 'new' line from Anniesland to Queen St. ( Although that line was sometimes used during engineering works back in the 70's ).Really looking forward to it !!! When I stayed with my ex-girlfriend in Dalmuir it was quite easy to get to trainsontime from the Clydebank/Dalmuir area by car-Erskine Bridge, M898, M8, come off the M8 at Abbotsinch/Renfrew, head down Renfrew Road, theres a wee shortcut from Renfrew Road into the industrial estate- real timesaver 15 minute drive, no need to go around the Paisley ring road. If you havent got a car the Arriva 300 bus will take you from Clydebank to Paisley town centre and its a 10 minute walk from Central Road. They are looking for new premises, in fact Daniel said they were seriously looking at Clydebank but preferred to stay in Paisley as thats where they generally all stay around. Ive been a long term customer of them and D&F Models and Pastimes. Your always guaranteed a very warm welcome in both and both are reasonably priced. Whats nice is that the staff in D&F models once you tell them your name, they will remember it! Pastimes are really friendly too when you get to know Gordon and Anne, good banter and both know their stuff place is a treasure trove for some rare stock and other items. Glasgow Model Centre- I havent been there in a while but they are on the Cathcart Road, within sighting distance of Crosshill station on the Cathcart Circle/Neilston/Newton line-10 minute train journey from Central Station, he mainly does cars and planes but quite knowledgeable on Bachmann/Hornby and ViTrains and again competively priced too. JERRY
Many thanks for the information, Scottish Modeller. I remember D&F models from when I lived in Glasgow. The staff were, as you say, very nice people.I'll certainly try to see as many model shops as I can when I get there. I'm based in Saudi Arabia and model shops are, well, let's say, somewhat thin on the ground here. Before Saudi, I was in Brunei for four years, and model shops there were even scarcer !!!
