N Gauge and Hornby Select

I have a small 4'x2' n gauge DC layout with a passing loop and a three track fiddle yard. I have just been given a Hornby Select controller so I was wondering if I should try and change my layout to DCC. It should be simple as I have used settrack points etc . I already have a couple of locos that are DCC ready but is cost of buying the chips for the locos worth it?. I have always been happy with DC but I do like the idea of DCC. Maybe I should invest in a better controller.

What do you think?

DC v DCC for you is something only you can answer.

Changing your layout to DCC is easy...you just turn all the circuits on. All the talk about a bus & feeding every rail is for extra reliability so forget about it for now.

The Select may be THE most basic DCC controller available but it does provide the basic running benefits (ie individual control & maximum voltage across the important rail-wheel connection)....so don't think about changing it yet.

I started with a Select, 3 chipped locos & a short test track just to see if it was right for me. Within days I decided that I would wire my new layout specifically for DCC (ie without any section breaks & switches).

I recommend chipping 2 locos & temporarily wiring all (or just some) of your sections together to the Select & have a running session.

You'll know if it is right for you soon enough. Only then should you think about re-wiring & different control system. If not, there's always e-bay!
