Guest Phil
Trying to research Midland Tar Distillers traffic which I know transited the South Staffs route in the early 1960s. I have been given reports of up to 18 wagons on a train heading west towards Stourbridge Jn. Tried googling with very little success. If anyone in their library has any books on private owner tank wagons which they could browse through I'd really appreciate it. My books tend to be or the BR owned vehicles and I've had no success with Larkin or Rowlands on my collection. Thanks in advance for any help

Sorry can't help on Midland Tar Distillers but they did merge to become Midland Yorkshire Tar Distillers with the Yorkshie part of the operation at Kilnhurst. An article on kilnhurst is in 'Industrial Railway Record 194' available from the industrial railway society (see their Web Site). In the article are photos of their eleptical tanks. Mark Saunders
Midland Tar Distillers tank 825 was in Immingham Docks in 1988. I think it was a 14tonner. Mark Saunders
John_Hughes
Didn't the Warley Show produce one of these tanks as the 'special' at their show a couple of years back?

Mark Saunders Later still I believe the whole operation was absorbed by Croda. The Kilnhurst site was in use until comparitively recently, and the remnants are still visible from the main line between Sheffield and Swinton, if it's the same one I'm think of from university days. It appears that MTD had 2 distinct sites pre-merger, at Banbury and Oldbury. Both sites apparently used residues from Oxford gas works as raw material; presumably MTD tanks seen around the Dudley area could have worked to Oldbury via Evesham and Worcester or via Leamington and Brum?
