Railway schemes on the network(non-private)

Recommended Posts

I got an email the other day from my local railway group the fobs (Friends of Brandon Station) who have had a real surge in community spirit with local businesses and volunteers helping them clean up the, once quite busy in it's 40's heyday, station area which was thick with weeds. It's really nice to see them making an effort and although I'm a member already it's really spurred me on to get down there and do something as the station is going from strength to strength. They are currently working towards the funding for a part lease on the station building and are more than a third of the way there.

Now that I've kinda plugged that I want to get onto what I've been thinking recently.

How many of us modellers are involved in schemes like this and if it's not breaking any rules maybe you could tell us about the scheme to raise awareness. I don't want this to become a moan station or somewhere to mindlessly plug schemes where you need money and feel this is a quick way to feel like you've done something. I want this to be you telling us how proud you are of a local project and maybe making someone clocking off a hard days work smile at your hard working locals.

So if you may?

Most schemes of this nature are either specific local initiatives, done by a local support group in conjunction with the local Station Operator and/or Network Rail, or (more likely) are done under the auspices of the Community Rail organisation. Community Rail is a government-sponsored organisation set up to promote and increase the useage of local lines and to involve local people and local rail user groups in this. There have been a few station improvement schemes in the South West on a similar basis.

Yes was just thinking about whether they get funding by Network Rail as this one is definately a Network Rail partnership. It seems there are quite a few in the more laid back rural areas of east anglia and it's really very nice to see people getting involved. It's definately spurred me to get down there and help out and put some ideas forth for a fundraiser.

Loads of info on ACoRP's website here. I've never been involved with any of this sort of thing due to not having a railway near here.

Back in the day I was a corporate sponsor of ACoRP - yes, the naming and repainting of 87019 was all my doing :P

There are some incredible schemes going on, I could never believe the enthusiasm out there among local users, really passionate about their life-lines. I'd encourage anyone in the catchment of one of the routes to definitely find out what's being done in the community to support it.

Here are some views of Penmere Halt, where the Friends of Penmere organisation have done some really top class work over the years to turn the station from an unloved and vandalised platfrom into something really rather super:
