Siemens unveils high capacity commuter trains

Recommended Posts

The first units of a fleet of new double deck commuter trains will operate timing trials between Moorgate and Drayton Park from 10:00 until approximately 12:00 on 1 April 2010. When fully tested these trains will be gradually introduced on suburban routes around London and the Midlands from December 2010.

The new units, made in Leicestershire by Siemens Transportation Systems UK, are of a double deck design based on those in use on local routes in the Einelieferung-Alternschustern region of southern Germany. They are smaller than other double deck trains in Germany and designed to fit through the restricted Unsinnberg tunnel, similar in size to the Northern City tunnels from Moorgate to Finsbury Park.

The design is different from conventional rolling stock with 6 doors per side on the lower deck for fast loading and unloading. There are also interior staircases, so excercises will be undertaken at station stops to assess emergency evacuation times. This will involve passengers occasionally being asked to detrain at certain stations. Passengers are asked to cooperate when so requested.

Members of staff, together with families and friends who may be interested, are welcome to sample the new double decked trains and to participate in the timing trials. For insurance purposes, a valid ticket is required. The trains will run every ten minutes, calling at Old Street, Essex Road, and Highbury and Islington in both directions.

Notes to Editors:

One carriage on the first test train departing Moorgate at 10:00am will be reserved for media.

For safety reasons, flash photography is not permitted in the tunnel section.

Siemens and Network Rail representatives will be available for interview.

Yeah right. Double deckers in the Victorian Underground loading gauge? Only for horizontal transport then :P

Ah ha - that's you caught out by the OP then :D . That bit of tunnel is to a mainline profile hence a logical place to test these spectacular new trains -even if they will only be operating for part of One day.

The LSWR had four wheelers that could take four vertical rows of people. Admittedly they did run from Necropolis and the passengers didn't need sandwiches...
