erratic running, from a couple of locos

i have a couple of locos that seem to have developed problems,

first up, brand new Hornby 153, fitted with a standard Bachmann 8 pin chip. runs fin at speed, but very jerky slow speed and crawling makes it lurch aroun like a bucking bronco. i had this problem before with a different loco, do i need a better chip to fit in it?

secondly, a hard wired lima class 37, fitted with a tcs t1 decoder, ran fine last time i ran it, now moves off, stops, then goes again, jerky. wheels are clean and all wiring seems to still be ok.

any help would be great.

thanks in advance

This is quite a common occurence with the Bachmann 3 function decoders. It can usually be cured by adjusting CVs 54 and 55. A bit of experimenting will be needed to get the best results. Change in steps of 5 or 10 for a start and then refine further as needed

Had a similar problem with the Hornby Class 153 Dmu,

I entered the CV values 10 into CV54 & 50 into CV55.

I don't know what them settings do, but it sure tamed the Beast.

Now it's running smoothly with a good turn of top speed.
