N Gauge DMU Kits

Recommended Posts

i have been pondering about this quite heavily, after trying some scrathbuilding i have given up for now, as i need more practice....

so i have thought about basic kits or basic conversion kits.

i basically want to know whats out there thats simple ish to make, however i have a taste for certain DMU's such as the Calder Valley units (Class 110) the Class 128, The 127, 126 and 117 as well as 105...

any ideas? a few google searches have surrendered nothing to me (although may be my search critieria)

any help will be greatfully appreciated,

LT

The BHE ones are very very old kits, white metal ends, etched sides, wrapped around separately glued together plastic floor and roof and a pair of clear plastic sides. They are hard to build a good model from but it is possible with a lot of care, filing, filler and judicious use of a set square. Motorising them is also a problem for the shorter ones as the old motor bogie used is no longer available. Some people use japanese chassis but they usually have short bogies and look ridiculous.

For the 63ft ones you can use the Farish (Poole era) railcar chassis with the sides of the plastic section below the motor thinned down and the white metal underframe blobs attached to it. Definitely start with a single car unit. Bogie outers for the old 101 DMU and the old Poole railcar are compatible and can be obtained from BR Lines.

With the Worsley stuff remember its real 'hands on' scratch aid stuff. Make sure you understand exactly what you get and what you need to find elsewhere or make. Don't expect instructions either. If you've built etched kits before then the Worsley stuff is reasonably obvious in assembly and generally accurate.

I believe Electra Railway Graphics now have some pre-printed vinyl bodyside overlays as an alternative to the brass sides on the BHE units.

I am now seriously tempted to go down the Vinyl route at the moment and complete a class 205 DEMU, problem is, where do i get a motorising chassis from?

Hi

Depends what you use for the basis of your model.

I prefer the TPM 1611 MUMU motorising unit for my units. Set of pictures here Taylor Precision Models MUMU (Motorising Unit) of one I built for my 4CIG. However, these will not fit inside a BHE coach shell without serious modification as the motor is too wide. These kits I beleive are actually to 2mm scale not N which would account for the narrower width.

Grahame Hedges prefers the Bachmann / Farish 158 and 170 chassis for his.

Cheers
