Sprinters et al, couplers.

I notice in cold wetaher very often the couplers on Sprinters etc are covered with a plastic bag. I assume this is to prevent icing up.

Is there a specially designed cover for the coupling, or do they just use the nearest available bin liner?

Not any kind of bin liner that I know, very heavy gauge yellow plastic with a drawstring top, even then can still be torn by the wind. How many road vehicles do you see with plastic covers flapping in the wind having been torn apart and they're only doing up to 70 mph.

Probably nothing to do with the weather, at my TOC, a coupler covered by a ‘yellow Plastic bag’ denotes it’s U/S and therefore “non-multi” at that particular end. We no longer use a big X placed in the windscreen.

We still use the big X, bags are for bad weather and usually fitted if snow is forecast

And if trains are uncoupled it is expected that the driver(s) will fit the bags on the couplers before driving off, really really nice having to jump off a platform into a foot of snow to fit these horrible, heavy, awkward bags on the couplers, not!

As I understand it, it's a fitters job on our patch
