Class 40 Bogie detail castings.

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about the bogies on the pair of 40's on my WB at the moment.

The Bachmann bogies have very poor relief, and in a long term project I'd like correct the bogie pivot points and produce a prototypical 1Co-Co1 drive configuration, if not draw up an etch for full springing (unless Brian Hanson of shawplan beats me to it).

So are there any casting out there? Or will i be needing to think about producing these somehow too...

Regards

Matt

Hi

Are you going to be totally realistic and model them with the cracks?.

Seriously, i don't know of any castings available, but being of plate designed. If you could fined some axle box castings, the frames could be produced from brass or nickel silver sheet. If you need any photos let me know and i will see what i can do.

Maybe not the cracks...

Really it's suitable leaf springs and the coils attached to them, and the axle box covers. I can probably produce the frames as you say in an etch, coupled with alan gibson's 2-mm hornblocks.

Thanks for the offer of the photo's, i'll be sure to take you up on the offer.

The bogie pivots would be handy, I made them out of palsticard on mine but a good etch would go down well. A decnt bodyshell would be even better though...

I didn't realize you'd altered the pivot on your 135 Rob.

Likewise I'd love to see a decent 40 bodyshell, but it really isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

Hi Matt

No problem with the photos , next time i go over to Butterly, i will take the camera. I do have a load of photos of the cracks in D212's bogie's, and was only jocking about that. The cracks and class forty bogie's have been a part of my day to day life for the last 15 years, and the problem will come to a head shortly.

If you want to get some really detailed shots, the CFPS have a bogie in  a striped condition at Bury.

Hi Matt,

Yes I had a go at making them although they are a bit fragile and have been repaired a number of times due to the amount of handling the loco gets.

Hi Mat

Just posted a collection of photos taken of D212 Aureol. Hope they will help, and if you require any more information please ask.

Gary

Thanks Gary, I've popped the Album on watch and book marked it. It'll be highly useful.

I think the current plan should be to re-use the Bachmann moldings cut out from the bogies, but draw up an etch for the bogie frames for use with some existing hornblock springing systems.

Thanks again

Regards

I asked the very same on the old forum - http://rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=38544

Sadly still nothing - strangely the older Peak bogies have pretty good relief in their detail. I keep hoping someone will do the axle boxes and springs as castings.

Well I know that eventually, Brian Hanson of Shawplan wants to tackle doing Bogies for 40's and 44/45/46's. I know he has the MOK kit Monty Wells made back for issue 0 of MRJ, i need to give him a nudge to send me the drawings he made off of the bogie.

However, i thinking about going the whole hog with my 40's now, so I figure cutting the axel boxes out of the Bachmann bogies with a piercing saw is the best idea. That or I go the Chris Pendlenton route and make working leaf springs, and make an etch for the Timken axel box covers.

I've spoken to him a few times about that! A complete etched replacement frame was the plan iirc.
