18B
Anyone any ideas why the "newer" Carlisle Kingmoor diesel depot was acated in favour of the "older" Upperby" depot?

APOLLO
Carlisle Kingmoor diesel depot was built adjacent to the then new Kingmoor marshaling yard for convenience I guess. Brit15

LNER4479
From memory, the diesel depot at Kingmoor latterly provided locos for loco-hauled services on the Kilmarnock route to Scotland, including the Northern Irishman sleeper to Stranraer. When the sprinter revolution happened and got rid of the rest of the Provincial sector LHCS workings then no more need for depot. Upperby was the Intercity sector depot at the time and still had work. Edited January 21, 2018 by LNER4479
Luke Piewalker
as LNER4479 said, with the coach cleaning and wrangling facilities at Upperby remaining in use it was probably easier to move the shunters to Upperby than move the coach handling to KM. seraphim
I like the idea of "coach wrangling", done that a few times. Politics also played a part. Upperby is convenient for the S&C. In the mid 1980s, it was suggested that the S&C - then at risk of closure - could be saved by privatisation. Upperby depot would have been the depot which went with the line. Practicality was also a factor. Kingmoor was very much laid out as a loco depot, whereas Upperby was set-up for coaches and DMUs.
Mad McCann
There was another primary factor in the location of the new TMD at Kingmoor beyond the obvious proximity to the new yard; availability of land. The site had previously been occupied by the Caley’s Kingmoor Down sidings, made redundant in 1963 upon the commissioning of the new yard. Following closure, the sidings, like Viaduct Yard were almost immediately removed and the site remained vacant until construction of the new depot began in late 1966 / early 1967. By December 1967, the depot was ready to take over from the steam shed directly opposite and this took place with the handover of the last steam diagrams to diesel operation from 1/1/68.
