RMweb Gold rodent279 Posted March 28, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Raised aluminium numerals were used on Westerns (mounted on a plate), Hymeks and A.C. electric classes AL1-AL6, by my reckoning some 275 locos. Were all the numerals the same, i.e. were the actual numerals used on Hymeks the same shape & size as on the A.C. electrics? Reason I ask is that I found this recently, going through some family possessions. It is aluminium, approx 15cm x 12cm (6" x 4.5") and has been painted silver/aluminium. There is BR corporate blue around the edge faces. Dad has no recollection of where & when he got it (he is ex-railway), but judging from the "28p" scribbled in felt tip pen on the front, I would imagine it's sometime in the 70's! There is no other marking that I can see, except possibly "393" stamped on the rear. Is there any way of identifying at least which class of loco it came from? cheers N Edit: there was of course one more class that had raised numerals. Can anyone guess which? E3109 Posted March 28, 2018 Share Posted March 28, 2018 AL1 to AL6 had a distinctive design, different from the Hymeks. I'd say it was off an AC, as the numbers were wider than those on Hymeks and yours looks to me to be the wider version? There's an image on Flickr of E3147, shows the cabside from a rear 3/4 view. Were the numerals on AC electric locos the same "font" across all 6 classes? Were they all originally polished aluminium? Were they later painted silver? Were any mounted on plates? E3109 Posted March 29, 2018 Share Posted March 29, 2018 I'd say they were all the same, and as you say the AL3s' were on a backing plate so presumably they were cast as part of the plate.
