brian daniels
Last week I went over to Trier for the 5 days of celebrations for the 175 years of German Railways. I spent the time riding the trains rather than linesiding for pictures so all my pictures are from the stations. It's a nice way to excersize though as when you stop at a station you have to do a mad dash to phot the train before it leaves again Here are some pictures from the first 2 days (in no particular order as it seems to upload them in any old order!), more to follow later and also the diesel and electrics that were out to play. On the first day we went to the depot at Gerolstein via the shuttle from the station which runs over the depot turntable to access their plarform! Sorry they are not labelled up yet but I did over 800 pics to sort through
RMweb Premium NGT6 1315 Posted April 11, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 11, 2010 Thanks for sharing - looks like you had loads of fun! I was not able to venture beyond Koblenz, though - photos from the Easter weekend are in my blog on here.
Allegheny1600
Thanks for the pics, Brian! I'm green with envy! Not just at you for being there and enjoying such a magnificent and wonderful scene but at Germany for being able to put on such a show! Could we in the UK muster so many main-line registered steam locos, i wonder? TTFN, John E.
brian daniels
The thing that made this so special was that they were all with old stock as well. That would deffinatly put a spanner in the works over here.

RMweb Premium 5944 Posted April 13, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 13, 2010 A few from me taken during the week, in no particular order. A superb event! Well worth the €150 for a 5 day ticket, plus £170 for the Plandampf (steam Koln - Trier - Koln and photo freights Gerolstein to Ulmen on the Tuesday). brian daniels
Very nice 5944. I did not know they ran freight as well. Whats with the extra £170 for Tuesday? We rode on the trains to Gerolstein with the event ticket ok? Should we have paid extra? Here are some pics showing the diesel and electrics that were out and about at the event. Unfortunatly for most of the time the weather was a bit dark and cloudy.
RMweb Premium 5944 Posted April 14, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 14, 2010 Nice photos Brian. I only went to Koblenz briefly and didn't manage to get up to Brohl at any point, there was too much other stuff going on! The use of steam on Koln - Trier for 4 days and the photo freights were dependent on sufficient bookings from photographers, but the passenger trains were open to anyone with event tickets. The times of the freights weren't advertised but there was a hell of a lot of people out for them! There was also supposed to be a steam hauled freight from Gerolstein to Euskirchen at 1.15pm on Tuesday afternoon, which got delayed for a couple of hours, then put back to 9am Wednesday morning, then put back again to 12.05pm. My dad and I gave up waiting for it when it became 24 hours late with no sign of movement!
Pixie
Lovely photos Brian! Small world - I was stood next to you whilst snapping the Nohab on the Monday morning, whilst we were on our was back to Luxemborg to fly home. Was very impressed by the whole event, it's certainly a step up from your average UK gala! Personal highlight for me had to be sipping Dunkle on the 103-hauled TEE from Trier to Koblenz. Hard life isn't it? Pix
brian daniels
Well I'm blowed Pix, stick some pics on here then pix (try making sense out of that after a few Dunkle's) We managed to F the 103 all the way from Bullay to a wet Cochem in the evening. One annoying thing was that when we went to do the Bullay to Trben bubble cars they had put a single 795 on it According to the a bloke who was in charge we had 75 people on it one way
Guest Max Stafford
What an utterly spectacular set of photos. Oh, how I sorely wish I'd gone now! So many wonderful machines - that 103 trip would be worth it alone! My favourite though is the 01.5. Wonderful styling and a superb whistle! B) The freight shot with the BR50 is pure 'Epoche iv'! Taigatrommel
Even with the airfare from here, I was tempted to go, but decided that once I'm back in the UK I could take several trips to smaller plandampfs for the same as flying all the way from NZ for one big one. Heretic as it may seem, I wasn't jealous until I got an MMS from Pixie of a V100, then I did start grumbling to myself. Seriously looks like an awesome weekend, and for all it was marketed as "Dampfspektakal" it looks like it did feature plentry of historic diesel and electric traction. Pixie
Well I'm blowed Pix It get's even smaller - one of the other guys on the trip was Phil Burkett (of the British HO society) who I believe is in touch with Jonh E (6026) a little further up the thread at the moment. stick some pics on here then pix I will do as soon as I've fired up the camera! I must admit that I left with more than a replica DB plate and the desire to to build a German layout - Standing at Gerolstein and watching the endless precession of steam and heritage diesel/electric tractions really gave the sense of what it must of been like in the 'old days' and there was a certain sense of awe. It's no wonder that train spotting was more popular back then... Pix
brian daniels
We could have had a RMweb meet by the sounds of it! Here are a couple of pics from the 80's when 218.387 was earning a living day to day on normal trains. And one of Gerolstein with loco hauled in every platform! I did give Germany a good caning back in the 1980's.
RMweb Premium NGT6 1315 Posted April 17, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2010 Thanks for posting these, Brian . How times - and tastes - have changed...Silberling stock in bare metal is long gone from regular traffic by now. There are no driving trailers with frontside passageways left either - these cars having been colloquially known as "Hasenkasten".
Horsetan
German steam......lovely ....*salivates madly* It would be great to see either of the two surviving DB Br.01 "Neubaukessel" Pacifics back in steam, or indeed the last surviving "10", but that seems unlikely to happen this century

Me is most definately green at all you guys who could get over to enjoy this. I'm glad you did though and have posted the pics to prove it! Maybe i'll get next year?!? Cheers, John E. brian daniels
We did the Emmulhausen after the steam event before it goes over to carts. Picture showing the top of the incline. The last time I did it I had a 213!

smudgeloco
My word, what great photographs, and of terrific subjects to. I do hope it was well attended. All the work it takes to organize such an event, it deserves to get great public support.
