jackrob
Can someone explain to me the main differences between 2mm and standard british 1/148 n gauge. I've got the jist of it, but i'm quite confused about it. What are its main benifits? etc. Any response will be a great help because i'm considering using it for my next layout. And is 2mm finscale track compatible with standard N gauge track? Regards.
craigwelsh
Presumably you've read through the standards and info at http://www.2mm.org.uk/ ? 2mm : 1ft isn't 1/148 for a start its 1/152(.4) though some people do use converted RTR 1/148 with it. grahame
And is 2mm finscale track compatible with standard N gauge track? Not really - athough modern N gauge stock will run on plain 2mmFS track it won't go through 2mmFS points. Basically; British N gauge; - scale ratio 1:148, 9mm track gauge, various wheel standards (from old coarse to modern finer profile), readily available RTR track. 2mm Finescale; - scale ratio 1:152, 9.42mm track gauge, finest set of wheel standards, no commercially available RTR track/points (although Easitrac is basically a build it yourself kit trackwork option). Etched Pixels
The easiest way to see the difference is at an exhibition. Look at the trackwork and in particular the point frogs and check rails. Look at the wheel widths.and the 2mm ones are dramatically improved. Technically 2mm finescale is 1:152.4 and UK N is 1:148 but quite a few people use 2mmSA stuff to build finer 1:148 scale models as 9.48mm trackwidth versus a theoretical 9.6mm or so is strictly for the micrometer wielders. The 2mm SA is a fantastic resource for knowledge and parts even for those (like me) who've not quite taken the final step. I'm using the easitrac trackwork with N scale stuff and using their 12.25mm N scale axles/wheels rather than 2mm fine scale (for now at least).
