At least six passengers are feared to have been killed when a landslide came down onto the tracks between Castelbello and Laces. The line was originally opened in 1906 and then closed back in 1990 when it was operated by the Italian state railways. It was then taken over by the regional government of South Tyrol in 1999 and subsequently modernized between 2000 and 2004. It is now being operated by private train and bus operator SAD.
