The line in question is the Val Venosta or Vinschgau Railway which is operated with Stadler-built GTW 2/6 type DMUs. At least six passengers are feared to have been killed when a landslide came down onto the tracks between Castelbello and Laces. It is, however, unclear whether the train ran into the debris or was struck only when it passed the site.

Was it really such a new railway line "inaugurated in 2005" ?

The line was originally opened in 1906 and then closed back in 1990 when it was operated by the Italian state railways. It was then taken over by the regional government of South Tyrol in 1999 and subsequently modernized between 2000 and 2004. It is now being operated by private train and bus operator SAD.
