The Bigbee Line
Ballasting has begun. Here some first drops after wetted with glue. Looking down the bay platform.
The Bigbee Line
Had a few problems on the big railway to sort out.... I’d starting the re-siting of the lighting tubes as they were behind the line of the track. It’s had an advantage of widening the “pelmet”. More storage. When first erected it had that Apollo 13, Jury Rigged style. It has now been levelled and generally neatened. This view shows the narrow pelmet and the new alignment on the left. Looking the other way you can see the tubes just behind the facia. Semi tidy showing the better illumination.
The Bigbee Line
The last light has been moved. Quite a work up. Now just to fill in all the shelf areas. New alignment of the tubes. Lightning seems OK The “stage” effect.
The Bigbee Line
I’ve a box of Peco telegraph poles. I’ve modded them to represent the 4 wire version. Trimming the bars and removal of some of the steps. Just need a roof for the post. Edited September 1, 2020 by The Bigbee Line
The Bigbee Line
Did a couple of things this evening. Started building up the ground level with the good old laminate floor underlay. Looking at pictures there is a rough bank, then the fence, with the field behind. in a couple of pictures the field has some rows of crops coming through. I’ve kept the fence line flat, with a slight grade in the field. Glued and weighted. The transition between the layers. The other addition was a temporary back drop. Nothing fancy, just blue roll. The Bigbee Line
Starting to build up the scenery. This is the bay platform at Hayling Island. There is a cess doubling as a path. Then a rough bank, the fence and a field. The field will be flat, but not level. It’s all built up from layers of laminate floor underlay. The rough area at the base of the fence is random torn off pieces glued down. I have a Peco electrostatic gadget to use....

During my lunchtime stress break, I cut a section of the MDF frontage. Then made some filler and swished the joints. This end still needs trimming. Here is the filled section. I’m going to paint the front Southern green.
The Bigbee Line
I’m heading in both directions with the scenery. Plus ordered some material for the electrostatic gadget... I create the “level” then glue and weight it down to dry.
The Bigbee Line
The facia continues. Put in scenic material as a base on a subtle alignment. Not too flat. Then cut facia and fill any gaps. The buffer stops are next. Need to paint the brickwork. Edited September 6, 2020 by The Bigbee Line
The Bigbee Line
Busy in the garden but did a bit. Painted the walling around the stops. Also gave the station building a coat... then the goods shed...
The Bigbee Line
Whittled a wooden beam for the bay platform stops. I need to scribe the lines and paint it red and white.
The Bigbee Line
The base is going in around the station building. Just getting the level in. It will gently slope down to station road. This is the view from the operating side. Edited September 10, 2020 by The Bigbee Line
The Bigbee Line
The approach road is gently sloped. Dropping down to the track beyond a wire mesh fence. Here I’m starting to build up the sub base. When the various bits are in and the glue set, I’ll cut a single piece, make a couple of slits and glue in one go. Then weight and leave. The fence line contour. A few extra braces to give rigidity. These braces have neat PVA wipes around. The void in between will be filled with any bits and bobs. The Bigbee Line
The area under the approach road had various odds and end graded for size and glued down. A single piece of board was then cut and glue applied. First placed and weighted down. I then started adding screws through into the baseboard. Not sure if you can see the variations of levels. Before screws added. After....
The Bigbee Line
Just been out to fill in the missing piece of platform. Looking towards the stops. The board has been cut to fit. Then glued and screwed. You can see the hole where the station building will sit. Here the canopy has been dropped in place.
The Bigbee Line
The glue is going off well. Finished screwing the facia up to the baseboard joint and ran some more glue into all the joints. Then a quick sweep with a brush. Then a ceremonious parking of a road vehicle. I have memories of collecting and delivering with dad. Brighton, Kemp Town, Lewes Road.... Brighton Lower Goods was alive with Scammel Scarabs. Dodging about. Happy days.
The Bigbee Line
The main part of the platform surface is in. I take pictures from various angles to check I’ve got the proportions right. I can now fill in the edge of the car park adjacent to the track, it’s a small chalky bank topped with Southern railway wire fence with chain link fencing. There will be 3 poster boards facing the viewer.... Also to make is a bullhead rail bumper protecting the station building.

It’s trying to do enough at each stage to make it “good enough”. So I tend to dodge about a bit between different things. The main theme at the moment is the scenic edge, then the surface, the rest of the track also going in. Other things are also on the agenda. The control panel etc. Plus wagons to build. The lights are a big bonus. Making it a little theatre. Yesterday I added a second row tube to illuminate the yard area and take the station building out of shadow. A great hobby. A great boost to learning.
The Bigbee Line
As mentioned I try to get a model and a prototype image from the same viewpoint. The looking at the detail. First. My image. Then an RCTS shot... The things to add include: Fence, posters, rail bumper, telegraph pole, lamp post etc etc etc

The Bigbee Line
Plus these 2. Not sure how common these paint schemes were. Maybe there’s a vanweb.
The Bigbee Line
I’ve been working on the approach road. The base is the usual laminate floor underlay glued to support pieces. These were arranged to provide a smooth but not completely level surface. The contour was held by a series of screws until the glue dried. I then set to, in creating the gutters where the platform surface edged out beyond the station building. A small disposable craft knife is the ideal weapon. The blade can be fully extended and carefully used in the fashion of a spokeshave, scythe or one of Bodiceas swords....
