Holiday modelling - Today its a test of Southern Railway 8 wire fencing....

Hmm how do I test my theories of construction?  Make a test piece....

So here is the test piece under construction.  The end posts with strainers should be thicker, but this is just the test.  The clothes peg is just keeping the strainer lined up while the glue dries..

With my limited holiday tool kit I've PVA'd the posts to a piece of timber...

This is the backside showing posts glued and braced with scrap card...

I marked the wire lines on a master post and marked up the others.  I have a roll of fishing line that I am going to trial for the wire.  I have cut slots with a razor saw to locate the line.  In reality the wire was held with a kind of cotter through a hole in the fence post.....

End post ready to have the strainer glued on...

I’ve added the ‘Corrie’s Patent Droppers’ at 6’ spacing to match the fence at Hayling Island. Thickened the main posts and added an additional piece of skewer and some card.  Hopefully some paint later. I’ve tried not to make it too neat.

I’ve made a card sheath for the biggest chimney. Thin card for the sides and a piece of mounting board set in the top to keep it square. Here it’s just sat over the core. When it’s dry I’ll trim the core for an easy slide over fit.  Then glue and add a base join where the flashing will sit.

The view from above.

Looking good Ernie.I thought the drops of pva on the wires did resemble the tensioners.

They did, an accidental bi-product that I then built up. I’m always taking pictures of details. Trying to create a illusion of the real thing.

I will build the sections of fence on the layout, split into smaller lengths with gates etc. To make them manageable to construct.

Thanks for the feedback

CARVING CARD

A technique I use with card is to create a basic structure as a core, using neat PVA as ‘spot welding’ to hold it together. If necessary it can be propped, taped etc while the glue dries.
I can the trim high spots, add to low spots, reinforce internally etc.

Here is a piece where the surface was trimmed back...

A piece of thin paper, till roll, was then glued, allowed to soak (expand) for a minute and then glued over the gap.

  • 1 year later...

Well now were in 2022......  Plus we now reside in the west of Wales..

I've a smaller garage, 19' x 8'.  Plus an 8' x 8' summer house that will be the modelling room and home office.  Planning retirement from full time in February 2023, so on the wind down.  My company have changed my role to become support and to transfer all the knowledge in my head.  The IT guy did offer to fit a USB port for that purpose...

Anyway, the baseboards of Hayling Island were disassembled, so now need to work out how to go forward.  As part of the house move I'd disposed through ebay etc most of my 2mm, 3.5mm and 4mm stuff, just planning to keep the green BILs and HAL for a small SR station.  However when packing I kept discovery stuff that I had stashed away and forgotten.  Usually things with a more sentimental value or things with little retail value.  To cut a long story short I have been diverted by an HO US outline shelf layout.

However I have been spurred on by the purchase of some brass coach sides to allow some bulleid coaches that ran on the branch.  However I will re-start with the major structures; the Station Building and Goods Shed.  I can then think about the format during the summer...

You won't regret your decision to retire. I was made redundant in April 2021 and decidsed to do just that. Been great ever since - more modelling time, more reading time and the wife will also retire this coming April.
