LSWR/SR stone wagon load

Presumably the protection was provided for stone that had already been finished (ie dressed), but I imagine that was not required for stone shipped in a roughly hewn state.

Is the banding around the stones some sort of aid to assist crane attachment in lifting the stones on and off the wagon?

Just found this. Large granite blocks no sign of ropes or chains. But does seem to have some form of protection to too edges.

The blocks could be restrained from longitudinal and lateral movement by timbers nailed to the wagon floor. Their own weight should be enough to stop them from moving upwards, and jumping over the timbers.

Jumping in about 4 years later, does anyone still have this photo? Seems to have been taken during the great data loss.
