1950/60 East Midlands Branch Questions

Im trying to compile data in order to plan ideas for a Branch line set in the East Midlands during the 1950/60 era.

I've fictitiously set it somewhere within the Leicester/Rutland area. As such I expect to include an industrial segment to a fictional ironstone quarry pasy the terminus of the line.

I need help with compiling a list of locomotives/motive power depots around the area, as well as ideas for industrial locomotives

Would this be a line of Midland Railway, London and North Western, Great Central, or Great Northern origin? This will have a major influence on all aspects of the model but especially signalling and motive power.

If it is to be a LMR (Midland Division) line, then the relevant sheds come under 15A Wellingborough, principally 15C Leicester I should think. For a line of the type your describe, 0-6-0 tender locos of classes 3F and 4F - in the latter case likely ex-Midland engines - will be appropriate. If you're happy with RTR 00, Bachmann is your friend. [Ref C. Hawkins and G. Reeve, LMS Engine Sheds Vol. 2 (Wild Swan, 1981).]

Are you aware of Rocks by Rail? I wasn't until just now. They have an interesting collection of industrial locos in varying states of preservation, many of which worked in the ironstone industry in the 50s/60s.

If its a branch line, the mainline it adjoins would dictate the motive power, and not always as logical as it might seem. The LNWR Rugby - Peterborough line drew locos from Peterborough Spital, Rugby and Colwick (traffic via the Joint line). GER D16s from March appeared from time to time, and also on the Midland route from Peterborough to Leicester. Ian Allan's East Midland's Branch Line Album is a good read to get an idea of which locos worked the lines in the area, highly recommended.

I want to be able to necessitate a mixture, so if Eastern Region locomotives appeared (or any other region's stock), that'd be great.

I've ordered a book on East Midlands Branchline so I will start my research there.

Yeah, I'm happy that there's a great deal of RTR Stock. I'm going to start thinking about Coaching stock next.

Also I'm berry aware of the Rocks by Rail Museum! I'm doing research on it along with the Northampton Ironstone Railway.
