RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 21, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2010 Hi everyone. Hope you are able to enjoy this beautiful weather while it's here. Whilst I take a break and a walk out can anyone help with the following please? What paint have you used/would you suggest from experience, for coach seating (1st/2nd/Open Class Bulleids and Maunsells, circa late 50's early 60's) & what have you used to represent those lovely wood interiors? Specifically I would like info on the Bulleid D2123 Brake Semi-open (wide vents, post'49 batch) but I've got loads of other diagrams to do so fire away with generic ideas! I think I can represent the floor, toilet and guard's accommodation from recent memory (Bluebell & Watercress) . Any other tips about coach interiors also welcome (especially if you happen to be 'Coachman'!!!!!) This is for a Comet model by the way, using the standard (Southern Pride I believe) plastic seating moulds + Comet etches + styrene sheet for flooring, partitions etc. Many thanks, 36E GC (gone but not forgotten). coachmann
You might find the following two links as useful as I did. http://www.lnersvrco...e_teak_set.html http://rpm-railpics....et/c961219.html I suppose it goes without saying to use matt paints for seats and gloss or eggshell for woodgrain partitions and compartment walls. Blue is generally recognised at FIRST and red for THIRD, but this is only a generalisation. The LNER used jazzy colours (blues and browns/fawns during the later 1930s. The LMS used maroon with a black pattern for third class during the 1923-34 period. Woodwork was often lighter than imagined (compartments weren't that bright). Books on carriages aren't very helpful unfortunately. Not the authors fault of course, just lack of handed down info. Larry
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 21, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2010 Thanks for that chaps. Confirmed my thoughts and also reawakened some memories. I think I'm going to have to go on holiday darn sarff and visit the Bluebell for some R & R and to see the coach shown on oldddudders' link. It's exactly the same diagram of Bulleid coach as I am at present building; how brilliant is that? Also, what a superb restoration job by the Bluebell coach team. Phil @ 36E Yes, this chap Dave Clarke and his colleagues really seem to know their biz. He posts progress snaps regularly on SEmG, which is how I got to know about their amazing work. He's also running in the London Marathon for the Bluebell - now that IS busting a gut for something you believe in!
Shamouti Ben Yafo
The Bluebell is always worth contacting; I find them very helpful.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 23, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 23, 2010 Thought I'd just let you see why I'm needing the information on the interior! If you want to, go to Kitbuilding etc. Oh yes, having got this far and having looked at the prototype pics of the same Diagram vehicle at the Bluebell I am thinking that I should add the hinges. They are very obvious features on the sides of Bulleid stock. If anyone needs an interesting browse through superb pics of restoration work on coaches just go to the link given by oldddudders; It's absolutely brilliant. 36E
10800
Not sure if it's an apocryphal story or not (it's nice anyway) but I'd heard that one of the Bluebell coach restoration team was once an original builder of the coaches for SR/BR. On removing some panelling or seating for refurbishment at HK he supposedly came across some pencil marks beneath which he himself had made as an apprentice all those years ago
