Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. Having not made a layout now for about 2 years and selling my last one the bug has hit again. I got some new and not so new N gauge stuff for my birthday but had nowhere to run it. I thought about what i could use for a baseboard that i had lying about and i wanted the layout to be small and portable, then it hit me. I bought a slightly damaged bread bin for 3 pounds last year ( the front was missing, which for me was a bonus ) and i thought, i wonder what i could build in that. After various track schemes / layouts i settled on a simple small inglenook design. The layout measures ( scenic part ) 23cm wide and 35cm long. There will a separate fiddle yard 35cm long. Now it was a challenge even in N gauge to design something that would fit and be reasonably interesting to operate but i wanted a simple layout to run trains on so it is going to be a small freight yard with a warehouse or two and possibly a fuel unloading depot or a unloading platform, not sure yet. So far i have cut a hole in the left hand end to give access to the fiddle yard, next job will be to paint the back scene blue to represent sky and then to pin the track down before ballasting. Here is a pic of the trackplan, not very good but it gives you an idea. More soon and pics to follow. Jerry.
ECML180
I'm looking forward to seeing this progress! Good luck!
Jerry1975
Thanks ECML180. Here is pic of tonight's work. As you can see i cut a hole out of left hand side for fiddle yard access and i also laid out some track and a building to get a general idea of how things may look. The front of the bread bin was missing ( hence cheap price £3 ) and i took the top bit off, so it looks like this now. Next job is painting back-scene a sky blue colour. more soon. Jerry. Jerry1975
Thanks Kye. Hi everyone. Here is a pic of today's work, not a lot done today but i have painted the back scene blue which took 3 coats to get a nice finish. Next job is lay track, cut it to length and then pin it down. I'm not sure whether to go with a country scene as main setting or a more urban setting. What do you guys and lasses think ? More soon. Jerry. sapper_k
i think maybe the blue is a bit ........ blue, maybe a stick countryside backscene on to the sides then tone the blue down to match the sky colour of the backscene other than that you seem to be making good progress, keep up the good work kye
Jerry1975
i think maybe the blue is a bit ........ blue, I think your right, any idea how i would go about toning it down a bit ? Jerry.
oggy1953
I think your right, any idea how i would go about toning it down a bit ? Jerry. I bought 'Sky' blue emulsion from Wickes and its the same colour as yours, The other morning i was in the garden and the cloudless sky looked very much like it. I guess we're used to a grey sky most of the time. The best way to tone down is mix in some white and coat again, or with a sponge dab some clouds on with a light grey colour...Hope that helps
ECML180
Urbany/industrially type setting I think...are those actcual words? You'll have to put a bakery in the background aswell
Jerry1975
Oggy1953: Thanks for your advice, i was going for a nice sunny day look with no clouds, i do think its a bit to blue but i'll see if i can get anything from Wilkinsons tomorrow. ECML180: Not sure if those are actual words , but i know what you mean, and i like your pun . Thanks for all advice and comments everyone. More soon. Jerry. Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. Well i was not happy with the blue colour i had painted the sky, so i went to a well known hardware store today and got a lighter blue-ish colour which i think looks a whole lot better. I will take a pic once the paint has dried. Next job to do after the paint has dried is pin the track down, then add some walls, make the bridge that leads into the fiddle yard, and scratch build some buildings. Should keep me busy for a while. More soon. Jerry.
Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. I managed to get a bit done today. I built the bridge in low relief, i wish i added a bit of depth to it but it will do for my purposes, i also lightly pined the track down, built a warehouse building and one or two other little things. Here is a pic of today's work. Not sure if i like the building i scratch built ( left of pic ) or not yet, you can tell i haven't built a layout for some time . there are no buildings in the background or anything as i tried to create a open feel to it, sort of in the middle of nowhere look ( which i may change ). just trying out some ideas. I do think the sky colour looks a lot better though. More soon. Jerry.
Dudley Dodger
Fantastic work. it's inspired me to build a layout that i'll actually finish.
Jerry1975
Fantastic work. it's inspired me to build a layout that i'll actually finish. Thanks for your kind words. I am glad i have inspired you, small layouts are great if your short of space, cash and time or just want a quick project to be getting on with. I managed to do a bit more to the layout and i have put a retaining wall all the way around the back, i was not happy with how it looked before and i think it looks better now, i'll post a pic tomorrow. I am not the best modeler by any means, but i think as long as your happy with what you have done, that's all that matters. With this layout i wanted somewhere to run my newly acquired stuff and i'm not to bothered about it being accurate, to scale etc, its just a quick project to have somewhere to play trains , i mean operate trains . More soon. Jerry.
Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. I will finish off the rest of the ballasting tonight and tomorrow. More Soon. Jerry.
oggy1953
Hi Jerry, i am building an N gauge layout at the moment, not brave enough to post on here, and i like what i see. I think your right about the blue, mine is the same as your first effort, so where did you buy your current colour ? and what shade is it ? Look forward to more.. Jerry1975
Hi Oggy1953. Thank you for your kind words. Go on, post on here, my layout is nothing special and this forum is for all levels of modelers whether novice or expert, i would like to see what you have in mind for your layout. The paint is a Dulux test pot 50ml, the colour is First Dawn, i added a touch of the other blue i had to it to darken it ever so slightly and i got it from Wilkinsons it was 97p. I hope this helps. Jerry.

Jerry1975
Thanks for the info, Will borrow the wifes camera in a couple of days time and take the plunge...Dont laugh No problem, glad to help. I am glad to see you have decided to put your layout on here, good for you and i wont laugh . Well tonight i have got a bit more work done, i have painted the rails a rust colour and i have nearly finished off the ballasting, i will take a pic tomorrow when its all dry. The layout is nearing completion and once the scenic side is done my attentions will turn to adding the little details like a few people, a car or van in the yard area, crates, boxes, etc. More soon. Dudley Dodger
A small question, how many 10' wagons can you fit on a standard straight?
Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. I have got a bit more work done and the layout has progressed quite a bit since the last pics i posted. Here is a pic of work so far. I am not to happy with the larger warehouse i think its a bit to big, but hey i cant really do much about it now ( i should measure things etc first ) you learn by your mistakes i guess. The layout needs some touching up, like the rails toning down a bit, weeds etc and tidying a bit. Next jobs are finish off ballasting, tidy up things, then start adding details like people, crates etc. Dudley Dodger : To answer your question, If you mean the standard straight ( Peco ST-1 ) then its one, if you mean the double straight ( Peco ST-11 ) then its three. I hope this helps. More Soon. Jerry.
Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. I did a bit more on the layout tonight, not a lot as did not have much spare time tonight. Here is a photo of tonight's work. Also an overhead shot. I lowered the warehouse building as i thought it was a bit to high, and i think it looks a lot better now. i also finished of a bit more ballasting, just the middle bits to fill in now and tidy up the track rust colour. I am a lot happier with how the layout looks now, its not great by any means but i think its ok considering i haven't modeled in N gauge for a few years. Tomorrows work will be to finish off the ballasting and if i have time maybe tidy it up a bit too. More soon. Jerry.
Jerry1975
Hi Everyone. I have been busy the last couple of days hence no work done on the layout, but i am free tomorrow so work will commence then. The layout is nearing completion so my thoughts are turning to my next layout, more of that later. More soon. Jerry.
