So from December it becomes pretty much useless once old content disappears. Might as well just switch it off!

I think that's where it's heading, in my opinion.

I think SEmG, a most valuable resource for Southern enthusiasts, used to use Yahoo for its members discussions. The site owner offered a decade ago to change the format to something more modern - instancing RMweb as a good example. A democratic vote revealed no majority for change, so it stayed where it was. I left to join RMweb instead, so have no idea whether SEmG will be at risk. I hope not.

I didn't get past mezzoman's initial link because of the sh!t cookie policy, but is Verizon, and thus Yahoo, part of Microsoft?

I've been a member of a couple of Groups, Anglia Gen and 60 Gen and all seemed well until Microsoft bought it. The email turned into ad heavy toss too with seemingly frequent data breaches etc compared to Gmail, but perhaps that's inevitable with a group system and tied in email.

Can Group admins lift their content and migrate to (I dunno) Discord or some such?

A group that I belong to switched to an outfit called "groups.io"; the transition was seamless and seems to work quite well.

SEmG migrated to groups.io as SREmG, still alive and kicking thankfully.

Verizon is a ginormous Yanqui telecoms company (kinda, sorta like a big version of Vodafone) which bought most of Yahoo a couple of years ago, merged it with some other purchased companies in its Oath subsidiary, and has been flogging off/closing down the bits it can't make a big enough profit from ever since.
