Guest
Hi all, I want to Adding a Zimo SUPERCAP68 Stay-Alive (Energy Storage) Super-Capacitor 6800uF 16V to a loksound v4 decoder has anyone done this thanks Roomey
Allegheny1600
Hi Dave, EEEK!! Don't do it, here's why; http://www.dccguy.com/?p=6833& Sounds like it's best to stick with ESU components for ESU decoders and so on. Cheers, John.
Hamburger
Hi Roomey, you can not connect them directly to a standard decoder, they are designed for some Zimo decoders that already have resistor, diode and voltage limiting on board. To connect to another decoder, you will need at least a resistor (minimum is 100 ohms) and a diode as usual, otherwise the decoder can be damaged. Overvoltage is not so critical in these capacitor types, even Zimo operates them 1V above nominal voltage. If your DCC track voltage never exceeds 16 - 17 V, the resistor and diode are sufficient, otherwise you will need a Zener diode in parallel with the capacitor to limit the voltage. By the way, Mouser sells these caps for 13.40. Wolf
