Oh, the irony ...

On more than one level, too.  I swear I'm not making this up ...

At about 7.30 this fine Wednesday morn I rounded the end of an aisle in the local Morrisons and noted the cardboard stand pushing clemenine-flavoured Coca-Cola , past which I was unable to proceed until two enormous women had decided which enormous bag of crisps to buy and moved one of their carts.  And at that very moment, I realised what my ears had locked onto but my brain hadn't yet told me to pay attention to.  No, not that Slade Christmas record, but ... Bob Dylan singing "The Times They Are A-changing".

Oh to be able to find out who puts together the playlist for their background music, and see if they're up for adding Neil Young's "Piece of Cr ap" ...

Those of you who know Fiona might know of her liking of decent music. Back in the day she was working in the cash office in a large Boots chemist and she was allowed to make up the music tapes to play in the store with tracks like 'Stairway to Heaven' - Led Zep. Bands like Dire Straits,  Jethro Tull and even the odd Emerson Lake and Palmer track. Some Christmas classics like Greg Lake's 'Do you believe in Father Christmas' and Tull's 'Solstice Bells' were also included to keep the store manager happy. Slade was only on one tape which was played only on Saturdays when she wasn't in.

On more than one occasion someone had been referred to the office to enquire if the selection was available to purchase.....

Oh how times have changed with the dreadful musak of today with singers obviously paid by the number of notes they can push out, I feel sorry for the shop workers these days, eight hours of that stuff would rot yer brain.

Yay! The return of the Sprout crisps. Compliments my homemade sprout wine perfectly...

Both beat soggy stewed sprouts every day of the season, these days it is about my only festive indulgence but I suppose Greta Thunberg with her inflated self importance will be putting a stop to that!

The problem there is stewing the sprouts. It turns out that sprouts are actually quite nice if cooked properly - chop them in half, dice some bacon, fry the bacon, then add the sprouts to the pan, with the bacon, for a few minutes.

Depends on the licence they have. Many of the big chains have a proper licence that allows you to play anything. The head office often send out a few CDs for the manager to play. Usually the manager isn't allowed to play anything apart from those CDs. Although some obviously do.

There is also the "generic" CD. You might have heard them without realising. They are the ones where the song "sounds" like something else. That song that seems like it's an obscure Bob Dylan or Elton John song, but it's not. They are usually made by session musicians and come copyright free so are cheaper.

Believe me, what the local Morrisons was playing this morning wasn't a cover version.  It was the original single by Dylan himself, which made such an impact on me when I first heard it in 1964 or thereabouts.  That's what made it all the more surprising.
