RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted March 13, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 13, 2020 Hi folks, Treated myself to one of the above; it's an earlier release, and not DCC ready. On running it seems okay other than a knocking sound, the frequency of which is proportional to the speed (one knock per revolution). I've popped off the body and, after removing some fine gravel from the works, I can see nothing untoward. There are no cracks visible anywhere; the gears seem to rotate as would be expected; none of the brake or sanding gear infringes the wheels, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions as to the cause, and possible remedy? Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, Alex.
34theletterbetweenB&D
A mispositioned wiper catching on the wheel back, something fouling a side rod, etc. etc.. Just got to plod away at eliminating every possible source I am afraid. 1
RMweb Premium Alex TM Posted March 14, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 14, 2020 Hi again, Thanks for that. Hadn't looked at the wipers. A friend has also suggested checking for a wheel slightly out of quarter, and seeing how motor and chassis behave apart form each other. Thanks and regards, Alex. DCB
Quartering or damaged gear teeth. If there was grit in the gears it could have damaged a tooth on the axle gear, any others it woudn't be one knock per revolution.. Quartering or a bent rod could also be the cause. Watch the wheels revolve, one might be trying to run eccentrically which is usually a bit of a give away. Rods can bend in the vertical plane or twist lenghtways both of which cause tight spots or make the wheels try to shift sideways or at least try to.
RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted March 15, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2020 I had a similar problem and found that a small cylindrical part of the chassis has shifted and was rubbing against the back of (I think) the front wheel..
