Wessex & West: Avonbury to Lostwithlea! Early 90's GWR Wessex to Cornwall multi-deck layout

Good evening!

I hope you are all staying safe during these tough times. Some of you may be aware from my other threads that while I am busy building my Cornish exhibition layout my home based layout has gone by the wayside due to moving house and other personal issues. However with a new start at home and a new 48’ x 15’ train room on the horizon I was at loose ends on how to move forward on the home layout.

At a recent get together with the modelling group it came up that Kevin (Hampshire Hog) was potentially looking to sell his wonderful Leaford layout as with his new Millway dock layout he was looking to free up some space and with a bucket load of early 90’s NSE stock from my old Wessex Junction layouts and Leaford being in my modelling timeframe it all seemed to make sense! After some consultation with Ian & Paul (Temeraire & PaulRHB) and some negotiating with Kevin I am happy to say that I am now the proud owner of Leaford!!

I first visited Leaford a few years ago and was amazed at how much Kevin had managed to create in such a small place in his front room and loved operating the layout. The layout thread is here:

Kevin has done so much great work on this layout since it’s days as an exhibition layout and as a home layout so much so it has featured in BRM magazine. I am so happy that the layout will be able to stay within our group of friends and I will be able to evolve it in its new home.

So just before the lockdown Kevin started to take the layout apart and myself and Ian managed to get it out of Kevin’s front room into the van and an hour down the road from Hampshire to Somerset.

So plans for the layout include extending the layout from its current 13’ x 9’ to around 28’ to 12’ in size. The layout will continue to be in the NSE era in the early 90’s as like Kevin my stock is of a similar generation. The existing layout is based in the Southern Hampshire area so I will keep it within this area with a new station based loosely on Eastleigh. I had previously planned on Salisbury as well as other Wessex idea’s so I will try and incorporate these as well.

Most importantly it’s about taking a fantastic layout in Leaford and evolving it into something bigger and better! Thank you to Kevin for agreeing to let me have his great layout and I hope I can improve on it!

To start with I have made some new frames for each section of the layout:

5042897B-D991-41B6-9EEA-8236FAC6947D.jpeg.770cd7ed6badeb23a04ca1ff0391fa77.jpeg

Kevin had previously built the layout on 2x1 PSE timber and this has proved solid over time but I wanted the layout sections to sit on their own individual ‘tables’ and then they can be bolted together and removed as initially they will go into the workshop before going into the layout room.

The original Part of the layout being setup in the workshop:

The old Leaford town section will be setup in another room. A deep clean first before anything goes back into place on the layout. I also plan to do a full re-wire as my electronic skills are not great so I want to re-wire To simplify so I can understand the layout electronics as much as I can. I will be switching the current block detection from team digital over to Digikeijs to match my DR5000 base unit.

Stay safe

Leighford Town is now setup in the other railway room to be able to be worked on. This will take a bit of a back burner for now as the main part of Leaford and the exhibition layout will take precedent.

The Leighford town board also gives me a place to store loco’s for a bit!

Thought I would also park some 159’s in the yard for storage! City of Salisbury and Templecombe sitting in the yard

  • Rhysb changed the title to Leaford becomes Leighford! Early 1990’s NSE & Rhys B's Workbench

Back to Leighford downstairs! One of the things I wanted to do was give the layout a deep clean. The layout itself was pretty clean but I wanted to go through every nook and cranny, behind buildings, under foliage, behind scenery etc and remove every bit of dust and build up from the last few years and basically get rid of all the bits of dirt you can only remove when the layout is in bits or not operational.

So out came the vacuum and the soft paint brushes on the trackwork!

First these 2 photos give you an idea of what I had done:

1. The right had side has just had a vacuum and to the touch was clean. The left handside has had a bristle brush with some soft cleaning fluid and this has really brought the colour out:

 1.jpg.b450f320d024b7160fd1c8502c05c6ec.jpg

Same with the below. Right hand side is deep cleaned the yard lines not yet started. The deep cleaning and vacuuming removed some of the loose ballast so I will have to repair this at a later date:

6.jpg.ce9c933243b112542501e94e77dbe87c.jpg

Next onto the buildings! Amazing how much builds up over the years!:

2.jpg.b1337954783efa5052fbc323abc45e88.jpg

I thought this is a great picture! The left board is complete ( you can see the difference along the board join) and you can certainly see the difference! The colours are starting to "pop" again:

5.jpg.07e8408868ca9b28119fdafc5a0e7f03.jpg

Finally a few "after" shots of cleaning all the buildings and details. Being able to tip the boards up has made this job a lot easier!:

after2.jpg.cfc3f6aab34f17780c54209f8888ebaf.jpg

A few more updates to come as a lot of work been done in the evenings over the last few lockdown weeks!

Thanks and Stay safe

So some pretty big projects I have been getting on with are:

1. Weathering loco's for the layout

2. The loco hauled cross country project

3. Scenic work and 3rd Rail

I will start with a bit of weathering loco's update! I have an absolute mountain of loco's to weather. My west of England 47/7's all need doing as well as my 33's and 37's and other odds and ends.

I have recently completed a St Blazey 37 for my Cornish exhibition layout! the exact details are here:

I thought I would also post a couple of pictures here too as the loco will also see service on speedlink services on Leighford bring china clay slurries up from the west in silver bullets, tigers et all. Here is 37416 in the yard at Leighford:

37416-4.jpg.16d73a69f1c1d6fb4ec92469abbb572e.jpg

37416-5.jpg.da1db72113040e06d6c5962943fd00a1.jpg

Moving on to my 33's. I have 4 to do. 33116 sits on 4TC duties and I will come round too soon.

I have completed my first civils 33. 33065 Sealion. This is an out of the box Heljan model. I have another exactly the same but with the assistance of Ian (Temeraire) we have come up with an idea for me to re-number this into 33025.

33065 wearing Pompey-Cardiff numbers (I still need to black out the lines) in the loading dock shunting some wagons:

33065-1.jpg.e23b32181889ea6e029c7a6e680a133b.jpg

Next for treatment was 33114. This will share passenger duties on the 4TC southwestern service with 116:

33114-1.jpg.d13cd35382df639de1412e98f23ce17a.jpg

And in the yard at Leighford with "superb". I have added the Eastleigh EH to one end and the Waterloo-Exeter 62 on the other. I have tried my best on superb to mask the too dark Hornby NSE colour. In the era of my layout the 50's would have mostly been phased out as the 47/7's were hard at work while the 159's were brand new. I didn't want to do a full repaint for just one loco.

33114-2.jpg.9d9086ae1f851e45731882037b0eb834.jpg

33114-3.jpg.aeb7fc3174d4a736af2d4885e5a18745.jpg

More to come soon on loco weathering! 37's and 47's!

Thanks.

Ok apologies for another update today but lots to catch up on and hopefully reading my waffle will take your mind off everything happening in the world at the moment!

One of my biggest projects so far is my loco hauled cross country trains! As you may know I am a big fan of the class 47. Growing up in North Hampshire in the early 90's the 47/7's and a few 47/5's were ploughing their way on the West of England and I would take many a journey on them. Also one of my first models my parents bought me for an early birthday was a Hornby railfreight class 47. I enjoyed watching the 47's on loco hauled cross country services as well.

When starting with my old loft layout running 47 hauled services was one of my primary reasons for building it. Leighford has also given me this opportunity. One of the reasons for extending the layout and making it into loops is to replicate the XC services travelling from the south coast (Poole/Southampton) to the north, midlands and even Scotland. Alongside the local DMU's, EMU's and freight services this will provide some good diversity.

Anyway enough talk! I wanted to replicate that early 90's feel of Intercity and Swallow 47's and Mk2 stock with the odd Mk1 here and there and a multitude of Intercity colours. An example here:

 5.jpg.b517ca4f24cda1a8d9417a0c955a02d1.jpg

I have set out to create 3 sets of coaches in sets of 7 carriages. One more modern in Swallow livery with a converted RFB and then two more mixed rakes. Its all a mixture of Hornby Mk2E's and Hornby and Bachmann Mk2F's. First job was more weathering!

Starting with the Mk2F's!

12.jpg.62973d9219444dfb7e0153cf44a5848b.jpg

11.jpg.e6eede0884b992488c370c050250fe31.jpg

This is my standard coach weathering technique. Fully re-spray the roof with an aerosol. Brush in some fading and weathering:

6.jpg.9f3c45dfae68dbd5b1d7c3b1f2fc3938.jpg

I then use some grime/dirt colour aerosol on the underframe and bogies. I mask the sides down to the steps leaving the bottom of the masking tape up from the edge. This way when spraying with an aerosol you get a slight overspray on the bottom of the coach side on the curved underside where the coach washer doesn't get too. Finally I very lightly weather the doorshuts and window frames on the Mk2's.

8.jpg.6b93eff033c76fda424e306f9b32ee49.jpg

The Mk2's were in pretty good condition in the early 90's so most have no replacement roof panels but on the odd couple I have added them in as I have seen the odd picture of a beaten up mk2. I mask up the roof and once the initial full repaint has been completed I seal and then mask some panels off and spray these in either a black or grey. Normally I remove the masking tape straight away to avoid the paint "lip" but in this case I leave it there as I want the lip to try and highlight the panelling:

1.jpg.0e8ab5478a3431d80d90caf5b3401911.jpg

2.jpg.8a29466df1d7f3f0bd752b6e60af066f.jpg

For good measure a blue and grey one! This one has a different roof colour just to emphasize the fact this is slightly older:

7.jpg.e68eb56d3eef2a80449fefadf6bdf9c8.jpg

This photo shows the rain window runs and also the grime build up on the curved bottom of the coach. I know that coaches were generally kept very clean even in the late 80's and 90's particularly on the Intercity rakes but if this train has come all the way from Scotland on a wet day im sure it will have dirt build up:

3.jpg.9ad0af311b0ce0bce8aed57843aebd9c.jpg

Finally the Mk2's on the layout:

4.jpg.12e536301b5ba90573ca319f620c88fe.jpg

Thanks.

Some more coaches! Hope im not boring you! This time the mk1's! A full brake and a buffet. The more modern rake has an RFB.

Will give you an update on the loco's in a few weeks. Enough coaches and weathering for now! I Promise

Have fun and stay safe.

Good evening all,

After doing some work on rolling stock I wanted to have a quick go at some of the refreshing of the landscaping on Leighford and add a bit of plane growth! This was just a test so picked a small area between what will be the new mainlines and the yard at Leighford Junction. I picked this area as wanted to create a little scenic break at this point:

This is the area before:

before.jpg.1a8ade8628257ce7a7c4b62060b72e4c.jpg

And now the view after:

after.jpg.ae81e052d23b0f53001883884bfaf432.jpg

I tried some new products in this area for a test. As well as the usual Woodland scenic scatters and turfs and their fine leaf foliage I also used a range of products from Heki that I got to create a bit more height and variance. Finally it was all sealed with PlastiKote hobby & craft sealer to bed it in. Really pleased with the outcome:

after2.jpg.829d3c9b65bcda878d4ee792b4d3a41e.jpg

Finally a view I wanted to create: 33065 coming out of the yard onto the mainline with a ballast train:

after4.jpg.e7eb09901701cf174f674235946ed365.jpg

Really pleased with the results.

Stay safe and happy modelling.

Nice work on the mk2 weathering. I particularly like the roof panels. One thing though if you are modelling a mixed Intercity/Bue-grey rake would be to remove the orange squares representing the door interlocking, as this was a feature added later.

Nice work

  • 2 weeks later...

Afternoon all,

Well after spending the best part of a week with the layout on its side for the partial re-wire attention has turned to the workbench. I was going to brave something I have never done before and that was a re-number! Also the loco had previously been poorly weathered so I also re-weathered as well!

Here is the loco I was wishing to replicate in all its glory! 33025. Based at Eastleigh this is perfect for Leighford and I had somehow managed to collect 2 of the Heljan 33065 model! The previously released Heljan version was in BR blue but around the time of my layout it was already outshopped in dutch livery:

33-33025-1992-02-28-Salisbury-c.jpg.da09409f4c4462eb27234817852bef7e.jpg

Thanks to the class33crompton website for the inspirational images!

Anyway onto the renumber! First things first as much of the old weathering was removed and then the new nameplates and depot plaques were added:

1.jpg.6dc4dcfcdd051f80d25e349d6e808813.jpg

3.jpg.d6ad7c0f677a87f2ecc2f0c2534383c4.jpg

Followed by the change of a 6 to a 2!!

4.jpg.1efaae70c930a311fa329652e9bf5c86.jpg

Finally I repainted the lighter roof section as this has been previously completely weathered black. Here it is alongside 065:

6.jpg.220776d0f49d361e207940c958b86926.jpg

Now for weathering. I have gone for my heavily weathered technique here. Similar to the James Makin method! Lots of time lots of different colours building up the layers and finally a little bit of rust:

8.jpg.988f58c940daba32ee34ae6ac833b0d1.jpg

9.jpg.d693f6131007248359301b89dc6bac6c.jpg

A little bit of rust was added around the depot plaques and nameplates. This I am sure is what it would have looked like later in its life!

11.jpg.290156c839fe55918d19ed8d6d7c3b4f.jpg

12.jpg.0635d503ede771e8734bd7932fbec53d.jpg

And finally the finished loco back on the layout next to its stablemate 33065 Sealion:

Many Thanks and stay safe.

Finally I repainted the lighter roof section as this has been previously completely weathered black. Here it is alongside 065:

Now for weathering. I have gone for my heavily weathered technique here. Similar to the James Makin method! Lots of time lots of different colours building up the layers and finally a little bit of rust:

A little bit of rust was added around the depot plaques and nameplates. This I am sure is what it would have looked like later in its life!

And finally the finished loco back on the layout next to its stablemate 33065 Sealion:

Evening all,

Just a couple of updates. Not much has been happening in the last few weeks on Leighford as I have been working on the exhibition layout. Not that I will have many exhibitions to go to next year as I’m sure this years will be pushed back!

Anyway I will come onto the new layout room in the next post but for now back to the workshop!

I have added the rear fiddle yard, remounted the main board on its table to allow the front scenery to be built up and we almost have a loop! The bridge back has been opened up and the view of the new curve to the tunnel is in its test position:

Well its been a strange summer! One good thing about being a golfer is things have continued somewhat normally! Anyway with the winter coming and the nights getting shorter its time to put the clubs away and venture back into the hobby room!

First off I have been going through some 47's! My frustration with terrible running of the Bachmann models left me with a thought of ditching them all in favour of my favoured Heljans. The Heljans just run so smoothly even years old second hand ones for a bargain on ebay! Anyway after some work with Paul RHB and James at DCC train automation some tweaking of the ESU sound chips have resulted mainly in smooth running. There is still some offenders that need sorting!

So it was time to start some more weathering of stock and with James Makin making a stunning job of the late 90's early 2000's ILRA pool it was time for me to focus on my prized 47 pool the 1992 NTWE shove duffs! Slowly over the next few weeks all of them will make their way out of the workshop into active use on Leighford.

First off is the lead loco 47701 Old Oak Common:

1.jpg.d69ee21279cecaef415d9c7d04c263c8.jpg

This is the standard limited edition offering from Kernow Model Centre and is already a great starting point. 47701 while at OOC was the lead loco and therefore was always kept very clean. its hard to find pictures of it really dirty and for the most part was in good condition despite its years of use on the Scottish push pulls. So a realistic light weathering was called for!

First off was the fiddly bit of painting the TDM cables the correct colour:

I decided to trial a new technique for the roof on this model to try and achieve the pitted/aged look on the roof. Pretty happy with the results:

Followed by roof colouring and detailing and a matt varnish:

Finally 47701 after some body weathering and another coat of matt varnish returns to service in Leighford Junction Yard:

Really happy with this project and now onto the rest of the pool!

Thanks and stay safe

Happy Autumn everyone! As we are deep in another lockdown I am getting ready to move Leighford into its new home in the new train room.

Previously I had started re-doing all the scenics on the layout. In some places the scenery is 15 years old so its time to do a refresh. I have also always wanted to do an autumn layout.

Some of the trees were damaged a bit during the original moving into the workshop:

Now when it comes to Autumn there is a problem! It appears that most of the scenics on the market from Woodland scenics etc seem to be vibrant almost stereotypical orange, red and yellow colours! Anyway if you really look at Autumn some trees turn brown later in the season and some are completly bare early on.

Anyway here is a prototype test of an early autumn tree where the leaves are starting to turn:

On with a few more trees!

Thanks

Hi Rhys,

Good to see this great layout again, I followed Kevin's progress on it for some time so it's good to see it with a new owner being looked after. Looking forward to the stock updates, the weathering looks great and will inspire me to crack on with my ever expanding fleet some day!
