Heljan Class 20 Cab Removal

Hi folks

I posted this on another forum but maybe it was the wrong place and this is more specific.

I want to fit a driver in to my Heljan Class 20 and wondered how to remove the cab and interior as it doesn't seem to want to part company with the rest of the body, I'm afraid to force it in case it is glued so any advice would be appreciated.

Also is there a way to remove the body without taking one of the draw hooks out as that is a complete nightmare trying to reassemble.

Any advice would be appreciated, many thanks in advance.

E

I have suffered this problem also!! Its not as straight forward as you would think.

There are two screws which hold the cab to the rest of the body, to get at them you need to get the large cab front windows out, they come out forward. Firstly I would try some sticky tape (electrical tape is pretty tacky), tape to the window firmly and gently try to pull them out. If they won't come, you could try the smaller windows the other side of the cab along the bodyside (these may come out easier), them push the large front windows out  from the inside.

Once you have the big cab front windows out you can get a screw driver and undo the two screws on the bulk head, if you look through the windows you should see the screws.

Hopefully this make sense, if not I have a 20 in bits upstairs I can take you some pictures of.

Many thanks, nothings ever straightforward it would seem.  Will give it a go!

The best stuff to remove windows outwards and headcode box glasses with ease without damaging them is Black Tack. It's like blue tack but a lot stronger, it's used for posing or camera setting in photography.

20's are a pain, but Black Tack does pop it out easily.

Jinty ;)

It seems I had the only class 20 made by Heljan with glued in windows. All this talk about just sticking tape or black tack on the windows and pull out easy

to get mine out I had to knock in the side windows, which broke the central pillars and knock out the front windows with a hammer and punch

You may not be the only one as still can't budge these although a hammer and punch sounds a bit drastic (did you video it), lol.  I have tried with electrical tape, selotape tape, parcel tape and Blue Tak (didn't have any Black Tack) as suggested above with no joy.  I will order some Black Tack and give that ago as I need to mount a speaker anyway.

You can bet if I didn't want them to come out they would probably fall out!!

Cheers E

no video. Too busy knocking out windows and swearing. The loco is now in bits and has been for a year whilst I sulk about the broken window frame
