Slate transfer wagons

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find some infomation on what types of wagons would have been used to transfer slate from the narrow gauge lines in north wales onto the standard gauge lines for movement around the country. I am pondering the idea of a small layout featuring standard gauge & narrow gauge for the 2010 challenge layout but i don't know what wagon's would have been used.

Can anyone help.

Simon.

What sort of period are you referring to Simon ?

The Padarn Railway from Llanberis to Velinheli (Y Felinheli to be correct) used 4' gauge wagons to carry four 2' gauge wagons at a time to the port.

The Festiniog railway had an exchange yard at Minffordd with the standard gauge.

Here is a preservation era image of the site ;

I've seen photos of 13T opens / shocs being hand loaded with slates stacked vertically, standing on the curvd siding. Can't locate it at the moment though.
