Ray Von
I have a pair of these type of shelters to place on my layout. I like how they look placed as they are in the photo - but prototypically, wouldn't they be sited as close to the station as possible? Would like to know before I commit and start drilling holes! RMweb Premium Kris Posted January 17, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2021 I would expect to see them close to the station building. People don't want to walk out into the rain to get to a shelter.

Rivercider
There are some places where the shelter is/was further from the footbridge. Whitland was one station for example. Might there be a historic reason why the shelters are located differently? Edit - Gloucester station is another with canopy some way from the footbridge and main buiding. This followed rebuilding of the station after closure of Gloucester Eastgate. cheers Edited January 17, 2021 by Rivercider Additional info

Edit* here's a pic - the red structure, it's still there but nobody ever uses it! Edited January 17, 2021 by Ray Von
Rivercider
On your layout are you needing to keep the canopy remote from the station building because of the canopy over the goods bay? Although the arrangement does look a little odd I do quite like what you have at the moment. I imagine the architect who oversaw the partial rebuilding of the station liked the symmetry of two opposing canopies, even though from a practical point it was less than ideal! cheers

That's exactly it, although nothing is "glued" yet....
Rivercider
This is the view at Whitland taken from the footbridge, which immediately sprang to mind. cheers
RMweb Premium Andy Kirkham Posted January 17, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2021 (edited) An example of a rather unusual arrangement of canopies is the rarely photographed Weston-super-Mare Locking Road https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263388963655?frcectupt=true A sequence of short isolated canopies was distributed along the length of each of the two island platforms Edited January 17, 2021 by Andy Kirkham
Ray Von
It looks like my shelters aren't so mispositioned as I thought....
RMweb Premium SM42 Posted January 18, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2021 Rowley Regis has canopies opposite each other, albeit the station building being built on the road bridge. http://www.miac.org.uk/rowleyregis.htm Andy
