I have a pair of these type of shelters to place on my layout.  I like how they look placed as they are in the photo - but prototypically, wouldn't they be sited as close to the station as possible?  Would like to know before I commit and start drilling holes! IMG_20210117_165938286.jpg.119c49bd118e23be3ad41be938cbfe44.jpg

There are some places where the shelter is/was further from the footbridge. Whitland was one station for example.

Might there be a historic reason why the shelters are located differently?

Edit - Gloucester station is another with canopy some way from the footbridge and main buiding. This followed rebuilding of the station after closure of Gloucester Eastgate.

There's a "modern" shelter at Margate station, but it's Bl**dy miles from the station itself!

Edit* here's a pic - the red structure, it's still there but nobody ever uses it!

On your layout are you needing to keep the canopy remote from the station building because of the canopy over the goods bay?  Although the arrangement does look a little odd I do quite like what you have at the moment. I imagine the architect who oversaw the partial rebuilding of the station liked the symmetry  of two opposing canopies, even though from a practical point it was less than ideal!

Very astute observation! That's exactly it, although nothing is "glued" yet....

An example of a rather unusual arrangement of canopies is the rarely photographed Weston-super-Mare Locking Road

A sequence of short isolated canopies was distributed along the length of each of the two island platforms
