Mrs Fothergill is very disappointed.  She's got all dressed up to go to a ball in Silloth on the North British but she's just found out that the station hasn't been built yet.  In fact it's worse than that, haven't even started the baseboards...

Seriously, I've just finished upgrading the space above the garage/workshop and was mulling over some layout ideas.  Carlisle Station pre the 1880 expansion really appeals.  Firstly the track layout is not super-complex and secondly there can be very few locations which have so much variety in terms of operating companies.  Looking at the timetable below would be quite an experience to see it in reality (and this is before the Midland arrived in 1876)....

OK, it's a challenge but hey I've got 8 x 5m of useable space and hopefully 20 years to do it(!)

First question, is this location and time period something that has been done before?  Would obviously welcome any advice around reference material to research this project, potentially the biggest issue is the period as I'm finding everything starts to get a bit vague prior to the 1890's

Realise I'm going to end up building most of the stock myself (to be honest I'm more a 'builder' than an 'operator' so that is what I enjoy) but any advice advice as to suppliers who might offer kits that could be built/modified to reflect loco / rolling stock relevant to this location / period welcome.
