I stopped using my smoke unit locos as they coated the track with oil.

The larger 'scale' Thomas toy trains have had water-based steam generators for some years now. They are quite effective. (I think this was the "Trackmaster" branding, but I'm not sure.)

Most three-rail O trains here have smoke units, one can even buy scented smoke fluid (Mega-Steam). :o On the few three-rail motors that I have, I disconnect the smoker as all it does is pollute the surroundings (and your lungs). Those motors may get converted to two-rail or sold off at some point except for one ALCo PRR RSD 5/7 that will be my "traveling or visiting" motor when/if I visit someone with a three-rail layout.

I saw this in the latest Hornby magazine.  It also struck me as similar to something I’ve seen on a large Southern region layout ( apols I have a shocking memory for layout names ) that I saw at a show (remember them?)

I suspect I’ll get the brio product for my kids.  Think they’ll love it!

Would have loved this as a kid, wonder if there is any potential use in the hobby ? I stopped using my smoke unit locos as they coated the track with oil.

Change the wheels and it can be anything you like! Baby oil is great as smoke oil and the wife cannot keep hold of me............

That German gauge one stuff is pretty impressive!

This little machine is about the size of a prit-stick, you charge it from a USB cable.  It's sold as a way of creating a 'calming mist' with a mix of water and relaxing scents, but I only ever use water straight from the tap.  I have some larger versions the size of jam jars I use for doing steam/smoke effects for photography work, but this one was bought for a model I made last year as a lockdown project;

Somewhat coarse toy/kit/odds-and-ends-bash for the garden.  The toy battery chassis left plenty of room in the saddle-tank to fit the little steam generator.

The effect is quite subtle, more a loco resting in light steam at a station than a Black 5 charging up Keighley Bank, but then the little generator only cost me a tenner, and produces just water vapour so won't damage either the models or my lungs.  A world away from the tales I've read of people puffing cigar smoke through pipes for cover shots for magazines back in the day...
