GlenPudzeoch
Hi, Partly as railway research and partly through family research I have come across the level crossing on Anlaby Road, where the North Eastern Railway crossed the road, which had trams operating. My question is, were the tram pick up wires at normal level, were they raised or was something else done? Many thanks in advance.
micknich2003
Glen, BoT regulations stated tram wires to be a minimum of 21ft above road level, a level crossing the railway open wires were substituted by a insulated cable. See attached c1910 picture of Anlaby Road. 4
RMweb Premium Grovenor Posted March 19, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2021 The trams being mostly double deckers often with no roof on the top deck so the wires had to be well clear of standing passengers. And at 21 feet would be 8 feet clear of the train roof so no need for the tram wiring to change level. The opposite way round is different, if its the railway that is electrified the standard height of railway overhead wires in the UK, is not enough for road clearance so the wires do have to be raised up for level crosings. Wickham Green too
Hmmmmm ............................ have there ever been locations - UK or overseas - where trams crossed an overhead-electrified railway on the level ?

Michael Hodgson
My father used to complain that when he was courting my mother the trolleybuses stopped short of the level crossing at Forest Hall. He was told this was because the LNER wouldn't allow Newcastle Corporation to put trolley wires over the ECML.

South Shields Corporation trolleybuses crossed the Harton Electric Railway at Laygate Lane crossing - There is a photo of the wiring arrangement at that point (extra insulators required on the trolleybus wires) in the Oakwood Harton Electric Railway book.
