cypherman
Hi all, I was sat at my desk and happened to notice the dome from an old Triang M7 that had fallen out of one of my boxes. That got me thinking does any one else here dismantle and cut up old bodies for their component parts. Buffer beams, Chimneys and domes, Cab rooves etc and store them for later use. Or do you keep complete bodies tucked away. Edited March 23, 2021 by cypherman
BernardTPM
Keep them a they are and just take off parts as or if required.

andyman7
I do try and harvest useful bits but generally clear shells out as complete spares every so often. However, given that one of my abiding memories of the 80s were the Crewe/Derby/Swindon etc scraplines I'm quite keen to model some of this - and not the ridiculous 'I've covered it in rust and called it a scrap loco' but to create something specific using actual photographs
Steamport Southport
Depends on what it is. I don't have as much interest in the very old models but still plenty of useful things you can find in bargain bins and eBay. I still look at and will pick up things like Mainline, Airfix, Bachmann, the better Hornby, etc. And Lima diesels/electrics/DMUs are still worth a look. Mostly after the bodies to put better chassis under and detailing. I did have a stage of purposely looking for Hornby Hogwarts Castles as you could pick them up on eBay for about £10. Usually in the toy section rather than the model railway section. They were basically Airfix Castles painted red with a revamped chassis. Sometimes they had a bit of damage or didn't work, but I must have about eight of them in the stash waiting to do something with. Worth it just for the tenders but a couple of them actually worked perfectly. Then Hornby brought out their new Castle. I actually bought another Airfix 14XX body a few weeks ago. It'll get a Comet or High Level chassis and detailing from Mainly Trains. I half expect Rapido to announce one of those next week though.... Tim V
Weathering practice. Old Hornby Dublo bodies are excellent, you can also practice stripping off paint on those.

RMweb Premium Steven B Posted March 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26, 2021 Cut off anything that could be of use. Use what's left for painting/weathering practice Put what's left on eBay, sit back and watch the eBay madness thread! Steven B.
Wheatley
I keep them whole until required. I have enough bits floating around as it is ! There's a semi long term plan for a 'steam for scrap' convoy using all the DJH chassis I couldn't get to quarter or run straight.
