RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2021 Lez fancied a day out and suggested we had a run out to the Churnet Valley Railway. We booked tickets for the 1.30pm train, which was actually a dinning train, but we just had a standard return ticket. Once again this was a line we had not visited before. The trip started at Kingley & Froghall station. It was a non stopping train. We grabbed a meal deal packed lunch from the station cafe to take with us.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 25, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2021 Motive power was in the form of a WW2 US Army Transport Corps 2-8-0. I had not been behind one of these before. Carriages were the usual BR MkI’s in maroon livery.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 25, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2021 As the name of the railway suggests, it run through a wooded valley which borders the river for part of the 20 mile run. The loco had to work hard going up the incline. Sadly as the train did not stop I could not get any pics of the locos at the engine shed. The LMS 4F I would have liked to have seen properly. We were in an open 2nd class carriage and on the wrong side to get pics. The loco did have a problem and went it went around the train on the run round loop the Guard announced there would have to be a change of engine and we would have to make an unscheduled stop. (We did have a rest stop for the engine after the incline so pressure could be built up again. ) As moved off there were a few stops and starts. But whatever the problem was, we did not make a stop for an engine change and she took us all the way back. Certainly no problem with lack of steam as when we got back the safety valves we certainly doing their job! All in all a nice trip and one we would certainly do again maybe when the Knotty carriages are in service. Cheers Ade.

You'll need Foxfield for that Adrian; another delight! Meanwhile here's a ride up front, enjoy the ride up the bank.
RMweb Gold chris p bacon Posted July 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2021 If the 2-8-0 was built in Lima, did it have pizza cutter wheels
