HighPeak45
Hi. I'm trying to find suitable wagons for my 1990/2000 era layout to use as grain wagons. The Bachmann polybulks would be the obvious choice but hard to pick up and expensive. Would JIA's, PRA's or CEA's be suitable for this type of traffic? jonhall
the roofed wagons might be technically suitable, but I'm not sure they were ever used as such. Jon
Railfreight1998
Unless you're willing to kitbash the grainflow/distillers polybulks, the Bachmann polybulks are about your only option, though they were only trialled on grain a handful of times. The CEAs could be an option with some modellers licence, as they were tried on just about any traffic, including seaweed.
doctor quinn
Would the 4 wheel Minibulks suit, they seem to have lasted to the early 90s https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brtgraincovhop?fpciidx=
HighPeak45
Yeah I think that's the way I'm going to have to go. Thanks for the advice.

Fat Controller
Electrotren used to do a nice bogie grain hopper, which several people have converted into either the Grainflow or Scottish Malt Distillers ones. They seem to be to an odd scale, which means they can be used amongst 00 stock; transfers for the Grainflow Polybulk are available from 'Fox', IIRC, and possibly from Cambridge Custom Transfers. RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted August 8, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) Hi there, I am not sure what scale you’re looking for but the N Gauge Society does kits for the longer Grainflow/Scottish Malt Distillers polybulks which are ideal for your period. I am not sure the types offered by Bachmann/Farish were used for grain, or for other powder commodities such as China clay. cheers Ben A. When the type modelled by Farish was first built, they were used for a run from Cornwall to Biberist ( Switzerland), and later to Sezzadio in Italy, carrying china clay. for some time, they were cleaned, and then backloaded with feed-wheat to Pinhoe, near Exeter. I'm not sure how long the cereal flow lasted.
