Nobody was hurt - it was a derailment (albut a pretty big one) over a set of points totally within Fratton depot while undertaking shunting moves.

 

Caused a fair bit of damage and issues with trains trapped on depot with lots of alterations / cancellations for SWR & GWR.

Nightmare scenario - a single-ended set of sidings, and the exit blocked with most trains trapped. Do I recall the Piccadilly suffered a similar problem at Lillie Bridge in 1927, with just three trains out of a great number available? But what price the additional costs of double ended depots?

I think that double-ended might be difficult at Fratton due to gradients on the running lines.

 

Probably better not have a major depot facility there at all - at or below sea-level as is nearly all the island.

Not to mention the way the depot heads off down the alignment of the old Southsea branch, so the buffers are a long way from the main line and pointing away from it.
