Two photos from the Stephenson Photograph Collection without recorded locations. Can any forum reader help identify the locations please. Thanks offered in advance for any assistance given.

(1) Neg. No. 26884 Junction stn with DMU & (2) Neg. 27331  Unknown junction showing BR LM  45353 approaching.

Edit - the DMU image (1) was accidentally reversed and is included, as corrected, in the thread below. Both images subsequently answered via this thread and answers published in our Journal.

First one looks like Melmerby station, junction for Masham and Thirsk on the Leeds Northern, although the platform which can be seen on the left in your photo is said to have been moved further north after closure of the Masham branch.  The differences can be seen in the pictures on the Disused Stations web site, although I'm having difficulty reconciling the presence of a DMU in your photo with the time lines suggested on the web site.

Second one; no idea I'm afraid although the line side pipework looks familiar!

Second photo - possibly Perry Barr South junction - photo looking north towards the Handsworth Grammar School Old Boys cricket pavilion and ground, the Great Barr - Perry Barr arm of the triangle and Perry Hall playing fields. Photo taken from Wood Lane bridge - train travelling from Great Barr/Bescot direction towards Handsworth Park/Soho junction.

If you scroll through the pictures on that site, there are pictures of northbound and southbound DMUs in the station. It’s Melmerby.

Isn't the photo reversed and the DMU is actually on the Thirsk line.

Yes - the signal arms point the other way on other pictures on the link to Disused Stations .  Error would be obvious if the picture was in colour!

I agree concerning the second photo - it looks as though it was taken to show the drainage pipe, and I think I've seen it before,  Signal box looks LNWR.

The second shot is definitely taken at Perry Barr, Birmingham.  The train is crossing what was known as Handsworth Junction and has left Perry Barr North Junction behind in the distance.  Perry Barr station itself would be off picture on the lines to the right.

I didn't think of that, but thought the two-armed signal in the background didn't look quite right!

With that knowledge, I now realise that you can see the replacement Northallerton-bound platform on the right hand side (as reproduced above).  I realise DMUs were used on that line before it closed, but there were none in service at the time the new platform was said to have been built.

So Keith should have it this way round (see below) not as he supplied it?

Edit: I think the poster is now the correct way round confirming the initial error.
