Guest Jack Benson
Age, access and health issues have driven me out of the icy dark garage which serves as a work area. This year’s Christmas gift is to help reorganise the lovely warm workshop so that there can be a sit-down workbench that tucks under the layout. Can anyone recommend a source of a workbench/desk for this purpose, are jeweller’s benches still a ‘thing’? Thank you and StaySafe
doilum
If you are still up for a bit of diy: Try charity furniture stores for a small desk that can be adapted. A full width shallow drawer on ball raced runners will keep all the small handtools close to hand. Legs can be shortened to allow the fitment of castors. Small bedside drawer units can be similarly adapted to keep other items close.
dave75
British Red Cross have a range of wheeled adjustable tables that might help, smaller versions of the ones in hospitals.
Campaman
I use a old writing bureau that I got from a second hand furniture shop. The front fold up so protects what I am working in when not in use and plenty of drawers and cubby holes for modelling equipment.
RMweb Gold 08221 Posted December 3, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 3, 2021 I use a portable workbench that sits on your lap from Grainge and Hodder - its very strong, has plenty of space to work on and holds your paints, tools, etc. Enables me to sit with the family and enjoy some social modelling time! Guest Jack Benson
A very nice, newish wooden jewellers bench popped up on a certain website for £60, ‘nuff said. It is part of my wife’s christmas/birthday present to me and she has cleared the space in the workshop. Thanks and StaySafe
KCL
Three years ago I bought the following computer desk to use as a workbench that slips nicely under the layout. Guest Jack Benson
Odd gift This is my Christmas and Birthday present And this jeweller's workbench, is just what I wanted for those long days making the Roxey coach kits. Other gifts were spent organising my workshop so that the workbench has a proper home. Off to Welsh Wales (home of my grandmother) to collect and have a pint of Brains. Guest Jack Benson
Not a whinge but.....finding a small vice has not been easy. The first attempt involved a certain auction website on a Sunday afternoon and a seller who didn't send the item (refund provided) so a local purchase was neccessary. Despite being home to a major importer and distributor of hobby tools, not one stockist of a hobbist vice moreover the aforementioned importer didn't do retail. Did it have to be Amazon? Well, if I wanted a next day delivery service and a choice of products, the answer is yes and no doubt it will be the same vice that Lidl's were selling earlier this year. Such is modern life. Thankfully the toolbox is full of files, saws etc. but I could do with a jewellers loupe, SWMBO suggests a pair of 4.5+ readers from the Thursday market stall and of course, she is right, as always.
