Axles for 009 gauge?

Recommended Posts

I am really struggling with this. I have purchased an 009 gauge kit that needs wheels and axles. Now the wheels are just standard 4mm stock, but I don't see any suppliers of suitable axles, which must be unique for the 4mm scale. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

009 usually use N gauge wheels and axles.  00 wheels tend to be a bit too large most 009 driving wheels are 8mm to 10mm dia and most 00 start at 14mm.  N gauge wheels usually have too many spokes for 009,  realistic 009 wheels are a bit niche.    I shorten 00 axles with an angle grinder and clean up the ends with a file in a Black and Decker drill chuck.

Since 009 is basically 4mm narrow gauge, the wheels are OO gauge. The kit identifies the wheels to purchase, but says nothing about the axles.

That sounds really weird. Are these enormous (for narrow gauge) wheels ?  Which kit is it ?

It is the Welshpool & llanfair "Earl" loco by Golden Arrow Productions. It requires 10.5mm 8-spoke wheels.

http://www.2mm.org.uk/products/shops.php?shop_num=3The 2mm association has wheels (for members) which should run on the sort of rails most of use use for 009. No idea if suitable.

But maybe you need standard OO axles for whichever wheels are recommended, and cut them down so that they protrude beyond the outside frames to fit balance weights and the connecting rods. Sorry, no idea, I've never heard of people using 00 wheels in 009 before - I tend to assume that the flanges will be far too tall and deep. Maybe for "specialist" (finescale) suppliers that is not true.
