Perhaps a removable wall and/or roof rather than an actual cut-away?

That has been my other idea though I'm not sure I personally would be able to build that well enough 😅

My other idea has been something in between with 3 or 4 wall sections at either end of the shed and the centre open with just the foundations showing to provide a divide between the ballast outside the shed and concrete hard standing inside

PXL_20230407_185011176.jpg.02a2746da68fafdec0bc8456b0947d86.jpg

This means the front of the shed will still be good for photos as the front end won't have a big squiggly cut in the wall

So in between laying a little more track and giving the walls in the previous post I have started to think about the smoke troughs and roof supports.

All of it is very very rough proof of concept.

The rafters are made using T beams and will have plastic strips forming the rest of the frame. The plan is to have everything fixed together with 3D printed parts in the hope that the rafters can be somewhat consistent.

The smoke trough is again very rough made from 1mm card. So rough the stack was about 4mm misaligned! The biggest issue I think is getting the shallow angle of the trough correct which I always find a bit difficult so might have to think how to achieve this accurately and replicate it 20 times (10 troughs with 2 sides)

N.B Ignore the magic floating trough. It's propped up with a bit of polystyrene that was 'magic erased'

Some slightly dodgy photos but I have been carrying on with the track laying and got almost everything laid that can be. To continue track laying the ash road pit needs building which is currently a WIP

PXL_20230418_182730053.jpg.58fb0e310fe7d6c39027aa5e5a406b5e.jpg

With the track properly laid I can think a bit better how the alignment of the track behind the shed will look

PXL_20230418_182627885.jpg.3dfff861749ebeb7b56028490f6b59ab.jpg

Hopefully it is clear enough with a brace in the middle of the photo 😅

The red outline is the embankment for the coal stage with bike sheds roughly drawn in.

The spur off the ash road is the turning triangle which I originally wasn't going to include but have changed my mind with it to fill in the empty space.

I'm unsure what to do with the space top right. At Aberystwyth this was just an empty space between the shed lines and the line to Carmarthen which was usually occupied by 2 or 3 cars. I don't know whether to leave this space empty or move the Carriage and Wagon Department offices which were on the opposite side of the Carmarthen line to fill the space 🤔

Another update on brick painting 😒

The good news is ALL the side walls and end wall bricks are now painted and had the mortar wash taken back so now I have all the constituent parts to form the walls of the shed.

I've decided that each end will be supported by 3 wall sections with the centre open to view inside the shed. I WON'T be making a removable section for the centre.

The major thing to mention is the main ends have been completely restarted. These were one of the first things made when I started the layout and somewhere down the line the height of the entrances had been cut differently and were some 3mm difference in height! Better to find out now rather than further down the line I guess.

So they have been rebuilt with a couple of revisions including the top girder having an inset as per prototype with a line of rivets along the top and bottom.

PXL_20230425_180850953.jpg.ab0db6a2b4cdad814817a0ff05613c8f.jpg

The next job to do is revise the CAD file of the windows and smoke trough to fit the new apertures (how I found out about the height difference) and then maybe (and a big maybe) actually start putting the shed together rather than different parts being sat on the layout, in boxes and on the workbench.

Can I do this in time for the arrival of the Manors??? Who knows 😅

In between pulling my hair out trying to get the 3d printer to work properly I have started on the concrete hard standing around the pits at the front of the shed. Everything is dry fit at the moment

PXL_20230426_175854312.jpg.34d595f28143062408ecfef880d83cff.jpg

It was too much of a temptation as well to get some locos out and do some posing with the hard standing and now complete bricks 😍

Well with the shed entrances complete I think its about time that I started on the doors. Test prints on the go ATM to see which orientation is best

EDIT

Successful print and at least it fits in the space! A couple of minor edits required but overall pretty pleased 😀

I’ve only just stumbled across this thread and I must say that it’s absolutely fantastic. The shed really captures the look of the original. It’s a great idea for a shed based layout to best use the space that you have.

it’s also nice to see someone else who shares the same interests in terms of Cambrian locos in the same period! I have undertaken very similar research and use of excel to look at locos based at 89c in the 1958-62 period, for which I’ve been building up my loco collection over the last couple of years. A new layout is to follow soon but I can’t settle on exactly where just yet! Have you got an Accurascale Manor on order?

I stumbled across your original build some time back but good to see you are still modelling and planning another layout at some point.

I do find the 1958-62 period really interesting as it is at the point where many GWR prototypes were still present on the network but with the slow advance of BR Standards onto the Cambrian makes for a real variety of locos without GWR or BR classes being dominant

I have 4 (yes 4) Manors on order!!! 2x 7800 for renumbering, limited edition 7802 and 7812

I've had a bit of a hiatus from modelling recently having started a new job but decided it was about time to carry on with the shed doors.

The front end doors have had their details picked out in black and are just about ready to be fitted at an appropriate time.

I've also printed the rear end doors. These differ slightly as one set will be closed and one open. The closed side will go on the road where the lifting gantry sit if modelling the more of the back of the shed. This line will operate as a dead end so with the doors modelled closed there isn't temptation to simply reverse a loco out of the shed on a road where this wasn't possible IRL with the other set open

Some more progress on the front end of the shed.

First orders have been attaching the shed doors so now the front end of the shed is nearly complete. I've also been painting the other set for the rear

PXL_20230512_184137928.jpg.5efc772e7b20f866835e3d60e6d1d53f.jpg

The postman today brought some DCC Concepts sleepers with solder pads so that I can finally split the track

PXL_20230513_130128594.jpg.bd8df27aa638ce5bb7476df708bb055e.jpg

Having done so I set about testing with 72027. I would use a more appropriate engine but the long wheelbase allows it to run over the joins onto the unpowered sections and is also the most "complex" in terms of wheelbase being a 4-6-2 tender loco. All good so far 😁

The angle of the photo makes the Manor cylinders look HUGE. The wagons in the background would make an interesting weathering project!

Alright. So I was looking at everything placed on the layout wondering what to do and finally decided it was about time to give the coal stage tank a roof!

So the first step was to add some tabs to fit the roof former on...PXL_20230520_145115545.jpg.88a3d283600868e5b5ccc377c99529fc.jpg

...and then fit the former, this was shaped to the rough curve of the roof with warm water...PXL_20230520_151356859.jpg.f863a83aa86df1b50a6ccaa29f1c418d.jpg

... then add the corrugated roof...PXL_20230520_162443492.jpg.738e6a6247c46080c17b2a831a457be1.jpg

... and then plonk it on top of the brick base 😀

Excellent! Manors are our equivalent of the Gresley A4 or the Stanier Duchess…therefore you can never have too many Manors! What are you thinking in terms of your re numbers? I want 7819 in late BR green (I too have 7802 on order) plus I’d quite like 7823, 28 or maybe 27! Hopefully you will have enough space on shed! I assume there was rarely more than a couple on Aber shed at one time, in between turns?

Very close! The mogul looks great though too. Reminds me of another couple of pictures from the start of the Huntriss book.

The plan is 7800 and 7802 kept as is. Swap the tenders of 7812 and 7800 (the 2nd one) to back date 7812 to 1960 when she first arrived at Oswestry with a rivetted tender with narrow horn guides and then turn 7800 into 7823 as upto 1962 she had a flush tender with wide guides, cross reference from various photos to confirm this is correct. The above photo is circa 1962 when I assume she had been to Swindon and was one of Aberystwyth's "best Manors" for working the CCE.

In quite a few photos there is normally the main subject Manor and then one or two hiding in the background somewhere. They are usually also an ABW and OSW Manor rather than 2 of the same shed. Looking at the Shed Bash UK page there was always an OSW Manor at Aberystwyth during the visits

Mandatory "I got an Accurascale Siphon G" post

Not exactly the most appropriate for the current layout but I guess you can call it future proofing 😏

Still, these weren't the commonest of stock with most milk traffic going south to Carmarthen and any that did go to Aber was probably tankers from Pont Llanio (I think). The more likely working for a Siphon during my period would be in the Aber-York mail train so it will be an additional vehicle for that train instead

Agreed, that must have been a likely use for the Siphon. I was looking through all my books a few months back to try and find pictures to justify mine, but they weren’t too common. I’ve recently got hold of two other vehicles known to have run in this train - a Southern region green bogie van and one of the new Thompson coaches! A great excuse to run stock from other regions.

I'm waiting until payday to get hold of some more laser cut inspection pits, buying 4 sets for the she is quite pricey.

So I have decided to focus on some of the smaller details for the shed. For starters some footplate access ladders and a trestle that just seems to randomly kick about the shed...PXL_20230528_190150719.jpg.d3ec94c4c1bef325ab309e0ed6375094.jpg

... And a bit of a storage area for down the side of the boiler house
