The Halfway House Pub in a Railway Arch.

Pub situated just to the right of the pedestrian arch of the road

Recognisable  as a former pub until about 10 years ago,  but lost the evidence during the London Bridge remodel

Hi Tony.

 

Unfortunately only the first arch, the remains of the second one have been removed.

If you walk through the roadside arch you can also see the two bricked up doorways that also went into the pub. I can remember at an early age the smell of beer as you walked past. I think it closed in the early 1960s.

These were the first arches to be let in the new London and Greenwich Railway viaduct in 1834.

The wall on the right hand side was the back of the Rotherhithe Road coach sidings.

 

P.S I see that the road sweepers have been busy along here !!!!
