jonhall
As an aide-memoire to myself, and in case its useful to anyone else I thought I'd record what area's each city ticket covers, because the scope does vary quite widely.
jonhall
Starting with Dresden, information correct in April 2024 In German gilt als fahrausweis vom ankunftstag bis zum anreisetag in allen nahrverkehrsmitteln ausser bergbahnen - in der tarifzone Dresden.  Translated by Google  Valid as a ticket from the day of arrival to the day of arrival on all means of public transport except mountain railways - in the Dresden tariff zone  Jon's comment - Unfortunately the Dresden tariff zone stops just short of getting you to the narrow gauge railways at Radebeul or Freital, but certainly covers all the trams and buses you might want to use to get around the city.   Tarifzonenplan-mit-Liniennetz.pdf Edited April 25 by jonhall

jonhall
Rostock - I can't find my ticket, but in 2023 it only covered the VVW Rostock core area, so you could get to the seaside at Warnamunde, but couldn't get as far as Bad Doberan for the Molli narrow gauge . michl080
Jon,  not free, but valid for a month throughout Germany on all local public transport including all towns mentioned above.  Deutschland-Ticket  This ticket is also valid on all regional DB trains, but NOT in ICE, EC and IC trains.  Only disadvantage is that it needs to be purchased online and it is only available as subscription, os don't forget to cancel in time!  Michael
bbishop
My experience is very similar to Jon's as it is an excellent way of travelling around a city. However in some (all?) cities, they are only issued if one has signed up to the H Rewards programme.  I was staying in the Berlin (Ostbahnhof), Erfurt and Frankfurt hotels about a month before Jon's trip. You can also get a few more points if you don't take the free ticket, so you could argue that its not free, but in all the cases above I needed local tickets, and therefore these were useful to me.  1 hour ago, bbishop said: I was staying in the Berlin (Ostbahnhof), Erfurt and Frankfurt hotels about a month before Jon's trip.  I assume Berlin Ostbahnhof is the same area as the one at HBf, and as I recall Erfurt's area is only really useful for the trams, but I'd be interested in what you get for Frankfurt?  Last time (possibly the only time) I stayed in the Intercity at Berlin Ostbahnhof, the incoming Steam special was so late (early hours of the am) and the next days railtour left so early, that I only spent 4.5hours in the hotel, INCLUDING the time taken waiting in the lobby of the hotel to get the group checked in, AND the queueing in the same lobby to collect breakfast bags!  The big advantage of Intercity hotels in Germany is that they are usually very close to the station. Trainspotting from the breakfast table at Hamburg last weekend!   Jon

Trainspotting from the breakfast table at Hamburg last weekend!   I have found some Ibis hotels which are very good for watching trains. At the moment I think the Ibis at Spandau may be my favourite with its guest rooms being at minimum 5 stories up, West facing rooms looking directly along the running lines when using a lens and East facing overlooking the Havelbrücke and along the running lines. Going next door to McDonalds to the upstairs seating gives an eye level front row seat to the station too. I must admit that trainspotting was NOT on my mind when we booked the hotel, but after the first day I was hooked on this location! Seriously intensive traffic to be seen.  The Deutschland-Ticket was worth its weight in gold, though while in the Berlin area we were only checked once all week!   We also happened upon a very good model shop at Mierendorffplatz while exploring the U-bahn from our Spandau base. Definitely somewhere to return to.
