PeteH
Hi, first post after many years and it's a question. I have a new 5MT that has been back to the retailer twice, first it was running like a 3 legged donkey with stuttered running and the speedo cable appeared to moving with the wheel rotation. Then it was repaired and the speedo was static but still had rough movement. I now have a replacement loco but the speedo cable is still moving slightly with wheel rotation giving a slight rocking motion. So, should the cable be static or not? If not is it an easy fix as I really don't fancy returning it again. Thanks in advance. DCC Fitted by retailer
34theletterbetweenB&D
The representation of the cable should be static, and this is only achievable once the pin in the cable engaging the drive crank is centred on the axle end. Slacken the slotted screw that holds the speedo drive crank in place, move crank to a better position, tighten screw and test. Repeat until smooth running is achieved. This arrangement, also found on the BR Std 2-6-4T, is an acknowledged pain; Bachmann smartly dropped it after the introduction of these two models. This was much discussed on the various early on line forums, and not a few owners simply cut off the cable representation.
PeteH
Hi, thanks for the reply. I bit the bullet last night and did what you suggested, I noticed that the crank? Was slightly offset to the middle crank so lined them up and adjusted accordingly. There did appear to be a location slot that the crank fitted in, so it's as near as I could get at the time. There's still a slight wobble to the cab so I may well re visit to see if I can improve things. Cheers
Butler Henderson
Resolved it on a jumping Std 4 tank by cutting through the pin holding the two parts togther.
RMweb Gold MikeParkin65 Posted September 6, 2024 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2024 If the cable is the same on the latest version as the early version (which I have) be careful with the plastic cable, its very fragile
